Position Overview

We are seeking to appoint an Advanced Respiratory Physiologist (Healthcare Scientist) to become a part of our dedicated and dynamic team at Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust. This role is particularly suited for a skilled Respiratory Physiologist or a recent STP graduate eager to enhance their expertise and contribute to the advancement of a thriving department.

The successful applicant will play a vital role in delivering high-quality lung function and sleep services, collaborating closely with the respiratory team and engaging with various departments across the trust to ensure exceptional patient care. Responsibilities include conducting, analyzing, and reporting on a range of investigations independently, while consulting with medical professionals regarding suitable tests and the application of investigations.

Our department is committed to providing training and support for the PTP and the direct entry STP program.

This position is primarily based at Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust, with the expectation of working across multiple trust locations.

Main Responsibilities

  • Conduct a comprehensive array of routine and intricate testing procedures autonomously, demonstrating a profound level of knowledge and understanding, and obtaining measurements from patients of diverse ages and health conditions. Tests may include, but are not limited to: Spirometry, Flow volume loops, lung volumes via body plethysmography, gas transfer assessments, and Cardiopulmonary Exercise testing.
  • Facilitate Cardiopulmonary Exercise tests as part of the respiratory and anaesthetic risk assessment service.
  • Support our multidisciplinary team in CPAP and NIV services, which encompasses assessment, titration, and monitoring of therapy.
  • Provide clinical interpretation and high-level technical expertise for all investigations conducted by both self and junior staff, adhering to current standards, guidelines, and departmental protocols.
  • Collaborate with other healthcare providers to maintain superior quality care.

Job Responsibilities

The post holder will support the physiology service in delivering respiratory and sleep diagnostics and therapies to the Worcestershire community.

They will provide leadership and guidance to junior clinical and administrative staff, addressing any concerns with the sleep service lead or lung function lead.

The post holder will assist in the training provision for various apprenticeships and graduate programs related to sleep disorders and respiratory physiology.

They will also support service managers in monitoring waiting lists and ensuring targets are met.

The successful candidate will be expected to operate independently as a specialized physiologist (Healthcare Scientist), collaborating with clinical scientists, physiologists, and nursing staff committed to delivering the highest standards of patient care.

Clinical and Professional Responsibilities

The role requires specialized knowledge in Respiratory Physiology and Sleep Medicine, including initiating patients on CPAP and BiPAP therapy, conducting lung function tests, and interpreting clinical investigations.

Additionally, the post holder will contribute to maintaining trust policies and procedures, support clinical audits, and ensure that physiological tests are conducted in line with best practices.
