Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Research Scientist to join our dynamic team within the Department of Microbes, Infection and Microbiomes at the University of Birmingham. The successful candidate will contribute to our research in microbiome science, focusing on unraveling the complexities of the human microbiome, particularly during the early stages of life.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct microbiological studies and perform microbiological techniques
  • Carry out microbiome ecology studies
  • Perform bioinformatics analysis
  • Develop research objectives and proposals for own or joint research
  • Contribute to writing bids for research funding
  • Supervise students and provide guidance to PhD/MSc students
  • Contribute to developing new models, techniques, and methods
  • Undertake management/administration arising from research
  • Collect research data through various methods
  • Disseminate research findings for publication
Requirements
  • First degree in area of specialism and normally, a higher degree relevant to research area
  • Experience in biomedical laboratory/industry-based research
  • Proven experience in performing microbiological studies
  • Demonstrated ability in microbiome ecology research
  • Strong expertise in bioinformatics analysis
  • Competence in analysing and interpreting complex datasets
  • High level analytical capability
  • Ability to communicate complex information clearly
  • Fluency in relevant models, techniques or methods
  • Ability to assess resource requirements
  • Understanding of broader management/administration processes
  • Co-ordinate own work with others
  • Knowledge of the protected characteristics of the Equality Act 2010
