Job Title: Advanced Clinical Practitioner - General Surgery

We are seeking a highly motivated and enthusiastic Advanced Clinical Practitioner to join our General Surgery team. As an Advanced Clinical Practitioner, you will play a key role in providing clinical assessment and support to patients requiring surgical input.

Job Summary:

The successful candidate will work autonomously, demonstrating a highly specialist knowledge and skills in the diagnosis and management of patients within General Surgery. You will order investigations, make appropriate/timely referrals, and maintain relevant clinical records. Non-medical prescribing is fundamental in supporting this role.

Main Duties:
  • Ensure that clinical practice reflects all current guidance from their professional regulatory body.
  • Work within agreed foundation trust and national policies, giving consideration to agreed procedures and guidelines.
  • Undertake advanced physical assessment and history taking in order to reach diagnosis and management plan for healthcare problems and conditions in accordance with agreed SOP.
  • Critically analyse and synthesize complex assessment data for sound decision-making.
  • Manage medications including assessment, review, and prescribing in accordance with current legislation, trust policies, and guidelines.
  • Make appropriate use of the evidence base, clinical guidelines, and policies at all times.
  • Initiate and coordinate the treatment and education for individuals and their families/carers for their health protection, health promotion, and disease prevention.
  • Improve patient outcomes, service delivery, and quality of care by benchmarking national standards and implementing into practice.
  • Acknowledge limitations in knowledge, referring to senior medical staff when scope of practice is exceeded.
  • Make referrals of patients to and receive referrals from other healthcare providers to ensure continuous care.
  • Serve as a role model to other healthcare providers when appropriate.
  • Evaluate practice to ensure professional, ethical, equitable, and quality healthcare service is provided.
Managerial and Organisational Responsibility:

The successful candidate will assist the Surgical department with evolving the Advanced Clinical Practitioner service. They will utilise foundation trust policies, procedures, and guidelines, actively contributing to their development and review. The candidate will participate in ensuring the effective use of all financial resources in providing and delivering the service.

Staff and Self-Development, Training, and Education:

The successful candidate will promote a learning environment within the clinical area of responsibility in which individuals take ownership for their professional development. They will act as a role model, and advanced clinical resource providing support, leadership, supervision, and teaching. The candidate will engage with medical mentor to identify professional and personal development needs evidenced with completion of a professional portfolio.

Research/Audit:

The successful candidate will take an active part in clinical governance, clinical negligence scheme for trusts, and research and development initiatives/opportunities. They will critically analyse published research, identifying its use within their own area of work.

Clinical Governance:

The successful candidate will demonstrate a proactive approach towards the management of risk in all of their actions. They will ensure that Health and Safety legislation is complied with at all times, including COSHH, workplace risk assessment, and control of infection. The candidate will report any circumstances that may compromise the health, safety, and welfare of those affected by the Trust's undertakings.
