Position Overview
We are seeking a dedicated and skilled Gastrointestinal Nurse Specialist who is passionate about delivering exceptional, personalized patient care. This role presents an exciting opportunity for a Registered Nurse with a background in endoscopy to become a vital part of our collaborative team.
The ideal candidate will possess the necessary qualifications and experience to perform diagnostic and therapeutic upper and lower gastrointestinal endoscopy procedures, including gastroscopy and colonoscopy. While proficiency in both areas is preferred, we welcome applications from those who may not meet the full criteria. A developmental position at Band 6 may be available for candidates who are eager to grow into the role.
Once fully qualified in both procedures, the successful applicant will be expected to contribute to the training of new endoscopists, both in clinical and non-clinical settings, following completion of a specialized training course.
We are committed to supporting the successful candidate through academic advancement and internal training to ensure they become a competent and independent practitioner. A qualification in Non-Medical Prescribing and ongoing education at level 7 to enhance clinical practice is essential.
Key Responsibilities
The successful candidate will be responsible for:
- Conducting 4-6 endoscopy sessions weekly, which may include participation in screening programs and covering for absent colleagues.
- Developing, leading, and implementing nurse-led initiatives as required by the service, such as capsule endoscopy, oesophageal physiology assessments, abdominal paracentesis, breath testing, and specialized clinics for IBD, dyspepsia, and HPB.
- Collaborating with the team to identify and pursue opportunities for service enhancement that align with both the needs of the service and the interests of the practitioner.

Experience and Knowledge
Essential
- Demonstrated experience in managing a clinical caseload with a multidisciplinary approach.
- Proven ability to communicate effectively with consultants and GPs as part of patient care responsibilities.
- Experience in supervising or coordinating staff in a clinical environment.
- Participation in quality assurance, audits, and research initiatives.
- Meeting endoscopy performance indicators.
- Accountability for the safe use of medical equipment and inventory management.

- Experience in conducting audits, quality assurance, and implementing changes in practice.
Qualifications
Essential
- NMC registered first-level nurse.
- Degree-level education.
- Independent JAG certified practitioner in gastroscopy and colonoscopy.
- Proficiency in cannulation and venepuncture.
- Willingness to pursue further studies at level 7 to enhance clinical practice.
Desirable
- Master's degree or evidence of study at level 7 in non-medical prescribing or specialist practice.
- Qualification in health promotion education.
- Competence in PEG insertion.
- Experience in capsule endoscopy.
- Background in nurse-led practice.
