About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Legal Counsel to join our team at Network Rail. As a key member of our legal department, you will provide high-quality legal advice and support to our business teams, ensuring that we operate within a compliant and risk-managed environment.

Main Responsibilities
  1. Assist and work alongside the Head of Legal (Regions) or General Counsel (Regions) on complex and high-value legal matters, including complex alliance arrangements, joint ventures, purchasing contracts, corporate reorganisations, acquisitions/disposals, and material litigation.
  2. Draft and negotiate commercial agreements, including complex and high-value legal matters, and advise the business on the resolution of day-to-day disputes, whether regulatory, criminal, or commercial in nature.
  3. Assist the Head of Legal (Regions) in the development of appropriate company policies, processes, and training for the areas covered by the Regions legal team.
  4. Participate in various ad-hoc multi-function project teams, advising on legal aspects and problem-solving to achieve commercial objectives.
  5. Instruct and supervise external lawyers to support their areas of responsibility when required.
  6. Provide regular information and reports of work in progress to the Head of Legal (Regions) or General Counsel (Regions) as required.
Requirements
  • Qualified solicitor or barrister with previous experience.
  • Legal background gained across a number of legal areas, including commercial, corporate, competition, litigation, property, or otherwise, with substantial commercial or litigation experience.
  • Ability to identify and minimise corporate legal risk.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, both verbally and in writing.
  • Proactive and commercially-minded.
  • Creative problem solver with a can-do attitude.
  • Works well under pressure, with the ability to prioritise and handle competing demands.
  • Basic financial/accounts understanding.
