Job Description

City of Edinburgh Council is seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Family Practitioner to join our team. As a Family Practitioner, you will play a critical role in providing support and protection to vulnerable children and their families.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assess and respond to the needs of children and families, providing intensive support and interventions to promote positive outcomes.
  • Work collaboratively with partner agencies, including social work, early years, and NHS, to ensure a coordinated approach to supporting children and families.
  • Develop and implement child protection plans, working closely with families and other professionals to ensure the safety and well-being of children.
  • Provide training and coaching to new staff and students, sharing your expertise and knowledge to support the development of our team.
  • Contribute to the development and review of policies and procedures, ensuring that our services are effective and responsive to the needs of children and families.
Requirements
  • SCQF level 8 or equivalent professional qualification or experience in social services/children and families.
  • Ability to assess complex information, engage individuals with complex needs in strengths-based and restorative change work, while building positive relationships.
  • Knowledge of theories relating to child development, addiction, trauma, domestic abuse, and the legal framework surrounding children and families.
  • Ability to work restoratively with professionals, maintaining positive working relationships that benefit children and their parents/carers.
  • Clear understanding and knowledge base in working with vulnerabilities both in pregnancy and in a child's early years, such as domestic abuse, poor parental mental health, homelessness, addiction, and the impact that has on children.
Working Environment

As a Family Practitioner, you will work in a fast-paced and dynamic environment, responding to the needs of children and families in a timely and effective manner. You will be required to work collaboratively with other professionals, including social workers, early years practitioners, and NHS staff, to ensure a coordinated approach to supporting children and families.

You will be based at the Wester Hailes Healthy Living Centre, working closely with colleagues and partner agencies to provide support and protection to vulnerable children and their families.

The post holder will need to respond appropriately and creatively to family crises and emergencies, which may involve child protection, substance abuse, domestic violence, health emergencies. This will be done in consultation with their line manager and other professionals.

The post holder must demonstrate the independent application of professional skills and knowledge and use considerable initiative and accountability in carrying out day-to-day tasks such as observations of families and decisions regarding their unborn/baby's safety and wellbeing.

The post holder will be required to join the PVG Scheme or undergo a PVG Scheme update check. Where an individual has spent a continuous period of 3 months or more out with the UK in the last 5 years, an Overseas Criminal Record Check will be required. You will be required to provide this check. An unconditional offer of employment and commencement in the post will be subject to the outcome of both these pre-employment checks being deemed satisfactory.
