Manchester, United Kingdom NHS Blood and Transplant Full time

Position Overview

As the Lead Technical Officer in Healthcare Operations, you will serve as the primary liaison for medical facilities seeking urgent supply deliveries, ensuring that their requests are processed and fulfilled with the highest level of precision. In addition to executing various technical and scientific responsibilities—such as overseeing the temperature regulation of storage facilities and performing maintenance tasks—you will also play a crucial role in mentoring and developing junior staff members.

We are seeking candidates with a level 4 qualification, such as a BTEC or HNC in a relevant scientific discipline, an NHSBT Foundation Degree, or equivalent expertise and experience in a manufacturing, logistics, or supply chain setting that necessitates intermediate theoretical knowledge gained through formal education.

Ideally, you will possess a foundational understanding of basic IT applications and some experience working independently in a laboratory context. A collaborative team player, you will be adept at inspiring both yourself and your colleagues as you navigate a diverse array of responsibilities.

NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) fosters a vibrant and supportive work atmosphere where collaboration is highly esteemed. We prioritize personal growth and offer extensive training and development opportunities accessible to all team members.

Key Responsibilities

Your role will encompass a variety of scientific and technical functions related to blood (and, when applicable, tissue) donations from our donors, supported by your team.

You will be tasked with the onboarding and training of new and less experienced personnel.

Your duties will include the meticulous handling of equipment and blood samples/donations, as well as performing routine tasks consistently.

You will be responsible for managing blood bags and various types of equipment.

This position requires flexibility in working hours and days, including weekends and public holidays, as per departmental scheduling (unless otherwise specified in the shift agreement) with appropriate notice.

Daily manual handling of equipment weighing up to 13 kg will be required, with or without mechanical assistance, following proper training.

This is a shift-based role covering days, evenings, nights, and public holidays, with some independent work. The shift pattern spans 8 weeks, with average hours between 8 am and 1 am. Participation in an On-call Rota will also be necessary, with shifts scheduled from Monday to Friday 2 pm - 10 pm, plus On-call Rota coverage on weekends, or Wednesday to Sunday 1 pm - 9 pm.

About NHS Blood and Transplant

At NHS Blood and Transplant, we take immense pride in the talented individuals who unite daily to enhance our organization. Our clearly defined values focus on delivering exceptional care to our donors and their families. We prioritize mutual support and aim to cultivate our expertise to transform lives, provide quality assistance, and offer rewarding career paths. This is an opportunity to be part of a unique team within a service that saves lives every day of the year. We provide excellent benefits, including 27 days of annual leave (in addition to public holidays), a comprehensive induction and training program, and a competitive pension scheme. We are committed to fostering an inclusive workplace that reflects the diverse communities we serve and actively encourage applications from all sectors of society. Our guiding principles—Caring, Expert, and Quality—drive us to save and improve more lives than ever.
