Position Overview
We are seeking a dedicated Lead Scientist in Cell Production to become a vital member of our Biotherapeutics & Advanced Therapies division within the Research & Development sector of the Science, Research & Innovation group.
This is a full-time position on a permanent basis. The role is located in the UK, and remote work options are not available.

The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency plays a crucial role in enhancing public health through the regulation of medicines and medical devices, driven by scientific research.
The Science, Research & Innovation group is committed to delivering impactful public health outcomes through world-class research and innovation, guided by a comprehensive Science Strategy that balances innovation with sustainability and affordability. This group is organized into four sub-groups: Research and Development, Standards Lifecycle, Control Testing, and Quality Assurance and Health & Safety.
The Research & Development function is responsible for conducting essential regulatory scientific research that supports the development of biological reference materials and medicines control testing, focusing on both current and future biological medicines. This function nurtures excellence in research related to biologicals, including biological reference materials, biological activity measurements, and product quality testing.
The Advanced Therapies Team consists of a multidisciplinary group of esteemed scientists dedicated to the regulatory research necessary for the safe and effective delivery of Advanced Therapy medicines to patients.
Key Responsibilities
The successful candidate will:
- Oversee the banking and quality control testing of human embryonic stem cells, ensuring compliance with established standard operating procedures and regulatory standards.
- Contribute scientific and technical expertise to the banking program, including validation studies and reporting on processes and equipment.
- Assist in maintaining high standards of service delivery, including the preparation of cell culture media and specialist reagents, stock control, and documentation management.
- Act as a deputy for the Head of Cell Production, ensuring adherence to documented procedures and specifications for cell line banks.
Candidate Profile
The ideal candidate will possess:
- A PhD in a relevant biological science or a BSc with substantial laboratory experience in fields such as Cellular Biology, Molecular Biology, or Biochemistry.
- Hands-on experience with various molecular and cell biology techniques, including human embryonic stem cell culture and good laboratory practices.
- Experience working in a cleanroom environment and familiarity with recognized quality systems.
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple projects effectively.
- A collaborative spirit, contributing positively to team dynamics.
