Position Overview

The Urology department at East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust is innovative and forward-looking, offering a remarkable opportunity to become part of a dedicated team of Urology specialists. This role is designed for a Full-time Lead Urology Fellow who will collaborate with a diverse group of healthcare professionals within a supportive multi-disciplinary environment.

This position includes a robust support system with 8 full-time Urology registrars, ensuring a manageable 1:8 on-call schedule.

Specializations available include Oncology, Endourology, and Functional Urology, while all consultants maintain proficiency in core Urology practices. Andrology services are primarily managed by a Clinical Nurse Specialist.

The department is recognized as an accredited cancer center within the Lancashire and South Cumbria Cancer Network, where significant pelvic cancer surgeries are conducted in partnership with another healthcare provider. The trust is equipped with two NHS-commissioned da Vinci robots, utilized for radical prostatectomies, partial and radical nephrectomies. Currently, cystectomy procedures are under review, and the trust serves as a referral center for complex stone surgeries, including PCNL procedures.

Key Responsibilities

The Urology service at East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust is committed to excellence, and this role offers a unique chance to join a collaborative team of Urology professionals. Responsibilities include:

  • Engaging in subspecialties such as Oncology, Endourology, and Functional Urology while maintaining core Urology competencies.
  • Participating in a multi-disciplinary team approach alongside medical staff, nurse practitioners, and allied health professionals.
  • Contributing to clinical research, quality improvement initiatives, and service development.
  • Being part of the middle-grade on-call rota, which operates on a 1:8 non-resident basis, supported by junior staff for emergency Urology patient management.

Qualifications and Skills

Applicants must possess:

  • Full registration with the GMC and a valid license to practice.
  • MBChB or equivalent qualification.
  • MRCS or equivalent certification.
  • Demonstrated ability to integrate effectively within the Urology unit.
  • Strong communication skills to engage and motivate both medical and non-medical colleagues.
  • Evidence of teamwork and collaboration.
  • Experience in clinical opinion on a variety of emergency and elective issues within the specialty.
  • Expertise in Urology and sufficient experience to join the Urology on-call rota.
