Interim Laboratory Manager (Microbiology)

Location: UK

Day Rate: £180-200/day

Duration: 3 months

Our client is a leading agricultural testing company, providing chemical analytical testing services across the UK and Ireland. They pride themselves on their reputation for quick, accurate, and reliable testing.

To support their existing management team, we are seeking a talented Laboratory Manager to join the team on an interim basis. This is an exciting opportunity to join a dynamic business that requires an experienced laboratory manager to support the delivery of their operational objectives.

The Role:

  1. Manage the allocation of staff to suitable areas to ensure all analyses are completed within agreed time scales, to all quality criteria and in a cost-effective manner.
  2. Be responsible for the appointment of new personnel and ensure adequate training is provided to enable efficient and safe performance of designated tasks, including carrying out disciplinary procedures when necessary.
  3. Ensure compliance with QA regulations regarding operations, procedures, policies, and equipment within routine analytical areas, maintaining continued accreditation to UKAS.
  4. Participate in a full programme of Lab Audits in collaboration with the Compliance manager.
  5. Monitor allocated work, interpret generated data, and implement corrective actions for deviations from key objectives or timelines.
  6. Examine current procedures and technologies, suggesting necessary improvements, and validate analytical work to ensure high-quality data is presented for reporting.
  7. Have a thorough understanding of every area of analysis within the operation to provide support to techniques and staff.
  8. Manage annual leave for laboratory staff to ensure sufficient coverage.
  9. Monitor overtime levels and authorize necessary overtime in conjunction with the Business or Site Manager.
  10. Take responsibility for all HR processes in the Lab Operations teams, including disciplinary issues, internal disputes, and managing leave and sick absence.

Requirements:

  1. Degree qualified, or equivalent, in a science-based subject (microbiology, chemistry, food chemistry/science).
  2. Detailed understanding of microbiology analytical techniques with experience in a commercial, high throughput laboratory.
  3. Proven experience in a UKAS accredited laboratory.
  4. Flexible, accommodating, and positive approach.
