About the Role

The British Geological Survey (BGS) is seeking a highly skilled and experienced individual to fill the position of Director of National Geoscience. As a key member of the Senior Management Board, you will play a crucial role in shaping the strategic direction of the BGS and driving the delivery of its science strategy.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead the development and implementation of the BGS's science strategy, ensuring alignment with the organisation's overall goals and objectives.
  • Oversee the delivery of the BGS's programme of geological mapping and modelling, ensuring that it meets the needs of stakeholders and contributes to the advancement of geoscience.
  • Represent the BGS at national and international levels, building relationships with key partners and stakeholders to promote the organisation's work and interests.
  • Work closely with the BGS's leadership team to develop and implement strategies for securing external funding and partnerships.
  • Contribute to the development of the BGS's research programme, ensuring that it is aligned with the organisation's science strategy and meets the needs of stakeholders.
Requirements
  • PhD in a relevant science field or equivalent experience.
  • Strong track record of leadership and management, with experience of developing and implementing strategic plans.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build relationships with stakeholders at all levels.
  • Experience of securing external funding and partnerships, with a strong understanding of the geoscience sector.
  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team, with a strong commitment to delivering high-quality results.
