Manchester, United Kingdom International Society for Industrial Ecology Full time
PhD Studentship in Sustainable Computing

We are seeking a highly motivated and talented researcher to join our team in the Sustainable Computing group at the University of Bristol. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work on a four-year Industrial PhD studentship, hosted jointly by the BBC Research and Development Sustainable Engineering team and the University of Bristol.

The project aims to understand and reduce the environmental impact of video streaming. You will apply industrial ecology methods to expand their applicability to complex attrition and allocation scenarios. This will involve establishing the current energy and greenhouse gas footprint from data centres, networks, and user devices, identifying hotspots for climate impact, and proposing sustainable interventions.

As part of this project, you will develop comprehensive sustainability assessment models, undertake extensive data collection, sanitisation, visualisation, and pipeline development, and propose sustainability interventions. You will also have the opportunity to engage with cutting-edge research and contribute to the net zero transition of the media sector.

We are looking for a candidate with a strong analytical background and a passion for sustainability. If you have a strong interest in Lifecycle Assessments, Power Measurements, and/or Energy Systems modelling, and are eager to engage with data analytics and mathematical modelling, we encourage you to apply.

The ideal candidate will hold a minimum of a merit at master's degree level in an area related to digital media and/or quantitative environmental assessments. Proficiency in a programming language such as Python or R is also required.

As part of this project, you will receive comprehensive training in academic writing, introductory training in media, internet, and entertainment sector, as well as advanced training in Lifecycle Assessments and Environmental Impacts. Supervisors will also ensure training for any coding and/or software skills as well as public engagement skills if needed and/or desired.

Please note that prior to submitting an online application, you will need to contact the project supervisor (Dr. [Name]) to discuss your application. Online applications are made at https://www.bristol.ac.uk/study/postgraduate/apply/. Please select Computer Science PhD on the Programme Choice page.
