Key Responsibilities:
The primary function of this position is to deliver expert Mechanical Engineering guidance for the conception and evolution of innovative designs, as well as troubleshooting, diagnostics, and recovery of existing products.
As a Principal Mechanical Engineer, you will spearhead innovation and offer technical leadership to fellow Engineers and Technicians, transforming concepts into detailed schemes backed by calculations and documentation to ensure compliance with specifications. This role demands a commitment to providing exceptional service to clients, adhering to timelines and budgets with minimal oversight, and the ability to present intricate design details to high-profile clients.
Core Duties Include:
- Utilizing product expertise and advanced engineering knowledge to create design concepts and solutions from foundational principles that align with project and client needs, supported by sketches, hand calculations, and relevant data.
- Preparing and delivering clear Mechanical Development Plans, Design Scheme Data Packs, and other engineering documentation for both internal assessments and client discussions.
- Assuming a Design Authority role to review and approve datasets (drawings/MBD), ensuring compliance with required standards and accurate reflection of design intent, while adequately defining components for manufacturing and inspection.
- Taking responsibility for design risk management, identifying, defining, and overseeing work packages to mitigate risks in product design early in the development process.
- Demonstrating competence in validating and verifying requirements using appropriate tools (e.g., DOORS) and managing these throughout the engineering lifecycle.
- Collaborating effectively across all engineering disciplines, engaging with technical specialists as necessary.
- Overseeing the work of senior and junior mechanical engineers and technicians, taking technical responsibility for the design solutions and technical data packs produced, while tracking completed work against time and cost constraints.
- Conducting Design Authority level reviews of other mechanical engineers' work, including designs, design data, hand calculations, and technical reports.
- Ensuring adherence to departmental and company policies and procedures by Engineers and Technicians.
- Assisting Team Leads, Projects, and Mechanical Functional Managers in estimating future design tasks.
- Potential travel may be required to represent the company, deliver presentations, and conduct product installation assessments.
Qualifications:
A degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field, or an equivalent combination of qualifications and experience is essential.
Must meet the UK-SPEC requirements at the Chartered Engineer Level.
Extensive experience across the complete product design lifecycle, from initial concept to production, within an engineering context.
Proficient in preparing technical datasets (drawings/MBD) and design review materials.
Skilled in utilizing CAD tools for design model preparation.
Desirable Skills:
Experience in areas such as avionic systems, optical displays, mechatronics, electronics packaging, anthropometrics, composite design, additive manufacturing, and test and measurement equipment will be advantageous.
Familiarity with dynamic, structural, and thermal analysis tools, including validation of their outputs, is a plus.
Experience in leading mechanical or cross-disciplinary design teams is preferred.
Current or previous SC level clearance is beneficial.
Proficiency in the CREO CAD system, along with experience using Team Center, DOORS, and JIRA, would be advantageous.
