Job Description:

At Leonardo, we are seeking a highly skilled Lead Optical Specialist to join our team and contribute to the development of next-generation optical capabilities. As a key member of our team, you will play a critical role in shaping the future of our defence programme and driving innovation in advanced sensing technologies.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Develop and mature optical mechanical concepts, including system architecture definition, lens design, and performance simulations.
  • Provide expertise in modelling and designing imaging lenses and optical systems using commercial tools such as ZEMAX OpticStudio, CodeV, or equivalent.
  • Investigate and develop novel optical materials, coatings, and processes to enhance the performance of high-sensitivity, low-noise detection systems.
  • Liaise with customers and external stakeholders to understand emerging business opportunities and drive technology development.
  • Develop work packages and scope milestones and deliveries within a project team environment.
Requirements:
  • Experience in lens design and optical analysis using commercial tools such as Ansys OpticStudio, CodeV, Fred, or equivalent.
  • Early lifecycle development of optical mechanical concepts.
  • Optical steering and stabilisation expertise.
  • Background in investigating the performance of different optical coatings.
  • Development of SWIR, MIR optical systems and multi-waveband optical systems.
  • Surface treatment for higher optical efficiency.
  • Stray light control techniques.
  • Techniques to increase optical transmittance.
  • Investigating the maturity and performance of unconventional optical elements.
  • Advanced understanding of classical optics principles.
  • Experience with technical proposal writing, project budgeting, and team leadership.
