About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Construction Lawyer to join our team at Barratt Developments. As a key member of our Group Legal and Compliance function, you will play a vital role in shaping the future success of our business.

Key Responsibilities
  • Manage a broad spectrum of legal work, including reviewing, drafting, negotiating, and advising on various legal agreements, primarily property and construction contracts.
  • Review, draft, and negotiate terms of appointment for architects and other consultant types, as well as negotiate with contractors appointed under large package agreements and/or other design & build contracts.
  • Provide steering and advice to the business, including the Executive/Board, on various legal issues affecting the house building sector, including compliance and regulatory matters.
  • Be capable of providing advice on construction litigation matters, such as terminations, pay less notices, and adjudications, and identify and manage external lawyers' input where necessary.
  • Take responsibility for supervising and training more junior lawyers within the team.
  • Be a lead participant in shaping and delivering the future strategy of the Group Legal Team, including implementing a tailored training program for the wider business.
  • Actively participate in and collaborate with senior lawyers and/or the Group Head of Legal on complex and strategic projects.
Requirements
  • At least 8 years of post-qualification experience (PQE).
  • A motivated, energized, and confident character with a 'can do' approach to work and advice.
  • Commercial acumen and the ability to effectively balance risk with the overall aims and objectives of the Group.
  • Private practice training is essential, and in-house experience is helpful but not a prerequisite for the role.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team and autonomously, delivering under pressure to tight deadlines.
  • Excellent organizational and multi-tasking skills, with good word processing and IT skills.
  • Preparedness to design and deliver internal training in construction contracts and their uses.
