About the Role

We are seeking an experienced Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to join our growing team at Hays Specialist Recruitment Limited. As a key member of our Mechanical Design team, you will play a crucial part in leading projects and mentoring junior team members.

Key Responsibilities
  • Ensure a thorough understanding of project briefs and design specifications.
  • Design and specify all Mechanical Building Services systems, including heating, cooling, ventilation, controls, and more.
  • Carry out and manage the production of detailed calculations using industry-standard software tools, such as Excel, IES, HevaComp, and in-house developed tools.
  • Prepare technical specifications using NBS and collaborate with our BIM team to prepare models and drawings, with a working understanding of Autodesk Revit.
  • Represent the organisation at meetings with clients and contractors, and conduct site surveys, inspections, and monitor site works.
  • Report and write technical notes, maintain complete records and archives to company standards, and adhere to all quality, environmental, and governance processes.
  • Manage your own workload, update your forward plan regularly, and work to time allocations, as well as manage elements of project delivery and understand budget costings.
  • Review progress, report any anomalies, and changes of scope to the project lead, and assist with the technical development of junior staff.
Requirements
  • Degree qualified or equivalent qualification in Building Services Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related subjects.
  • Chartered Engineer with CIBSE or IET.
  • Good level of computer literacy in a range of digital tools, including IES Thermal Modelling, HevaComp, NBS, and Microsoft packages.
  • Familiar with energy reduction methods and approaches to decarbonising new and existing buildings.
  • Some knowledge of energy-related contracts and funding mechanisms, such as SALIX.
  • Understanding of energy and carbon-related data capture and analytics.
  • Awareness of the principles of building physics, such as passive design solutions and fabric first approaches.
  • Competent in designing for measurement and verification, including experience of commissioning and post-installation evaluation of performance.
  • Experience of working in a design consultancy and/or some experience of working within a contractor design environment is essential.
  • Detailed knowledge of appropriate technical standards.
  • Able to take charge of project deliverables, make decisions, act on your own initiative, and operate in a proactive way.
  • Good report writing skills, experience of making presentations to and attending meetings with clients is essential.
  • Comfortable working within time and cost budgets as agreed at project briefing meetings.
