About the Role

As a Combat Driver with the New Zealand Defence Force, you will operate a variety of vehicles, from motorbikes to articulated trucks, in a range of scenarios, including passenger transportation, distribution of supplies, and hazardous goods transportation. You will be trained to drive, operate, service, and maintain your vehicles, gaining a range of licenses, endorsements, and NZQA unit standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Drive and operate a range of vehicles, including motorbikes, cars, and trucks
  • Service and maintain vehicles, including routine maintenance and repairs
  • Participate in convoy driving, tactical navigation, and vehicle recovery
  • Develop military driving skills, including formation driving and loading stores and equipment
  • Conceal and deploy vehicles in operational situations

Training and Development

You will undergo comprehensive training, including basic military training, RNZALR basic training, driver licensing and vehicle operator course, and junior transport course. You will learn about military vehicles, their functions, and how to operate them safely and effectively.

Career Progression

As a Combat Driver, you will have opportunities to progress to driving instructor, section commander, and fleet manager positions. You will gain experience in different roles within the driver trade, including tactical operations, weapons, and specialist soldier systems.

Entry Requirements

To be eligible for this role, you must be at least 17 years old, meet the citizenship and security requirements, and have a restricted Class 1 driver's license. You should also have no traffic convictions and be able to show that you are a team player with some mechanical ability.
