Position Overview
We are seeking applications for the role of Senior Consultant in Emergency Medicine at University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust. This position offers an opportunity to become part of a well-established and dynamic team, recognized for its commitment to exceptional education and high-quality clinical care. This role is ideal for those nearing the completion of their specialist training or experienced clinicians pursuing CESR.
We are particularly interested in candidates with a strong focus on quality enhancement and clinical audit. Additionally, applicants with sub-specialty interests, such as pediatric emergency medicine or dual training in emergency and intensive care medicine, are encouraged to apply.
As part of our ongoing development, we are embarking on significant capital projects aimed at enhancing our urgent care services, including a co-located urgent treatment center, supported by substantial national funding. This initiative, along with the expansion of our Same Day Emergency Care services, aligns with our vision of providing a seamless and collaborative urgent and emergency care experience for our community.
Key Responsibilities
The successful candidate will be an integral member of our team, dedicated to improving patient care and addressing the evolving challenges within Emergency Medicine. Responsibilities include:
- Conducting triage, resuscitation, diagnosis, and emergency treatment for all patients presenting to the Emergency Department.
- Ensuring initial treatment for patients requiring admission or follow-up is in line with established protocols.
- Providing ongoing care for patients admitted to the Clinical Decision Unit and those with mental health concerns awaiting treatment.
- Overseeing the appropriate discharge or referral of patients, ensuring effective communication and follow-up.
- Offering direct clinical supervision, training, and support to all Emergency Department staff, while organizing and delegating clinical tasks.
- Engaging in clinical governance, including addressing complaints, incident reporting, and results analysis.
- Maintaining awareness of Major Incident procedures relevant to Emergency Medicine.

Job Requirements
Essential qualifications include:
- A basic medical degree
- FRCEM certification
- Full GMC Registration with a license to practice
- CCT in Emergency Medicine or equivalent
- Entry onto the GMC Specialist Register or eligibility for entry
- ATLS, ALS, APLS, or equivalent certifications
Desirable qualifications may include:
- Postgraduate certificate in Education or equivalent
- Quality Improvement Program training
