About the Role

We are seeking an experienced Senior or Principal Ecologist to join our Exeter office and contribute to the success of our ecology team.

Key Responsibilities
  • Manage projects throughout their life-cycle, providing expert advice on ecology and biodiversity to clients, stakeholders, and project teams.
  • Plan, lead, and conduct ecological surveys, ensuring high-quality results and effective project delivery.
  • Undertake environmental impact assessments, biodiversity net gain assessments, and prepare a range of ecological reports and strategies.
  • Design and implement appropriate mitigation measures to enhance biodiversity and protect ecological features.
  • Support and mentor junior staff, sharing knowledge and expertise to develop their skills and professional judgment.
  • Build and maintain strong client relationships, as well as with contractors and regulatory bodies.
About You
  • Hold a degree in Ecology or a related field.
  • Have at least 4-5 years of experience in ecological consultancy, with a proven track record in project management, including medium to large-scale and complex sites.
  • Be experienced in advising clients on Biodiversity Net Gain, with a strong understanding of the DEFRA Statutory Biodiversity Metric.
  • Have demonstrable experience in complex report writing, including Preliminary Ecological Appraisal (PEA) reports, Ecological Impact Assessments (EcIA), and Habitats Regulations Assessment (HRA) documents.
  • Possess strong communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with diverse stakeholders.
  • Have an advanced knowledge of ecology and wildlife protection in the UK legislative and planning system.
  • Hold a protected species license or have a particular ecological specialism.
  • Be proficient in Microsoft Office software and have some knowledge of GIS packages.
  • Be a member or eligible for membership of a relevant professional body, such as the Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (CIEEM).
  • Hold a full UK driving license and have access to a vehicle.

Salary: Senior Ecologist £31-36K; Principal Ecologist £37k+ dependent on experience.
