Position Overview

Salary Range: £54,500 to approximately £68,150 per annum, commensurate with expertise and experience. Additionally, a flexible benefits fund of 20% is provided on top of the base salary, which is fully pensionable, along with a variety of competitive benefits available on our website.

Role Responsibilities:
As the Senior Engineering Project Manager for Washwood Heath, you will be responsible for executing legal and contractual technical duties related to project engineering within a Railway Systems Project delivery team. Your leadership will focus on progressive risk-based integrated assurance of railway system design, construction, and operational handover. Key responsibilities include:
  • Leading the risk-based engineering technical assurance of Railway Systems in accordance with HS2 assurance protocols, through comprehensive engineering reviews and submission of assurance evidence for technical stage gates.
  • Overseeing the acceptance of design, construction, and commissioning contracts for Railway Systems and interfacing assets, ensuring compliance with technical and sponsor requirements, as well as applicable standards and procedures.
  • Discharging the responsibilities of Principal Designer as outlined in the Engineering and Environment Management Plan for Railway Systems.
  • Acting as the NEC3 Supervisor as defined in the Engineering and Environment Management Plan for Railway Systems.
  • Communicating HS2 Engineering requirements to Railway Systems contractors and addressing technical inquiries.
  • Supporting the Head of Engineering Depots with internal and external reporting, as well as identifying and mitigating engineering-related risks.
  • Providing guidance on design solutions, promoting best practices and innovative engineering techniques, while driving consistency and identifying efficiency opportunities within Railway Systems.
  • Collaborating with Commercial and Project Managers to assess the impact of trends, progress, and changes on cost and schedule.
  • Offering technical direction in identifying and developing appropriate, cost-effective mitigation strategies and solutions.
  • Leading the technical coordination and integration of Track contracts with other interfacing contracts, including station and railway systems contracts.
  • Engaging with relevant teams on Environmental, Planning, and Consenting deliverables.
  • Proactively managing and communicating engineering issues or changes affecting Railway Systems.
  • Actively promoting and embedding Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) in all aspects of work, while supporting and adhering to organizational EDI initiatives, policies, and procedures.

  • Decision Making: Skilled in gathering and synthesizing information, identifying options, and applying sound judgment based on logic and reasoning.
  • Analytical Skills: Capable of utilizing diverse analytical approaches to provide relevant information to suppliers, stakeholders, and decision-makers using key facts and data.
  • Technical Leadership: Ability to offer specialized technical support and leadership based on required competencies and delegated authority levels, knowing when to seek further guidance from Subject Matter Experts.
  • Communication: Proficient in conveying discipline-specific technical concepts to colleagues, primarily through practical examples.
  • Information Management: Understanding principles and methods for information management, sharing, modeling, and data security, and knowing when to seek guidance from Subject Matter Experts.
Knowledge Requirements:
  • Familiarity with applicable UK design and construction regulations, including CDM requirements.
  • Understanding of risk identification and management processes.
  • Knowledge of challenges related to Railway Systems design, construction, and handover within complex delivery programs.
  • Commercial awareness, including an understanding of cost delivery, schedule targets, and the necessity for integrated solutions that meet all functional requirements.
  • Chartered Engineer status or equivalent experience in a relevant professional institution.
Experience:
  • Proven experience in managing multi-disciplinary engineering and safety standards, as well as assurance activities on large, complex major projects/programs.
  • Experience in balancing competing project and engineering demands, with implications for cost and schedule.
  • Experience in supporting CDM duties associated with Principal Designer and/or Designer roles.
  • Relevant domain experience in Depots.
