The role is designed to assist postgraduate researchers at the University of Glasgow in enhancing their English proficiency for academic writing, particularly for those for whom English is an Additional Language (EAL-PGRs). This involves spearheading the creation and implementation of a comprehensive framework of quality initiatives tailored for EAL-PGRs and their academic supervisors.
Main Duties and ResponsibilitiesLead the planning, development, execution, quality assurance, and continuous improvement of a series of learning and development activities aimed at enhancing EAL-PGR writing, aligning with the strategic objectives of the Research Culture and Researcher Development Portfolio.
Collaborate across various sectors of the Research Culture and Researcher Development portfolio to integrate EAL-PGR writing support into existing frameworks and communications.
Ensure a balanced approach to different writing development methods, catering to the diverse needs of EAL-PGRs. This includes workshops, individual consultations, digital resources, and writing festivals.
Provide specialized support for peer-to-peer learning and researcher-led groups that promote academic writing, such as writing retreats and mentoring programs.
Design and implement training for PGR Supervisors, working collaboratively with colleagues to enhance their engagement with EAL-PGRs.
Engage with university-wide, college, and departmental services to deliver a cohesive support system for researchers, participating in relevant committees and project teams focused on improving researcher writing support.
Stay informed about the evolving landscape of academic writing and publication, building strong networks to share insights and best practices from the higher education sector.
Act as a credible advisor, providing targeted intelligence to support effective actions on writing initiatives that align with the University's research strategy.
Foster a collaborative team environment, building trust and support among colleagues through respectful engagement and consensus-building.
Ensure the mission of Research Services is communicated and supported through the consistent collection and management of relevant data and regular updates on project statuses.
Work alongside the Research Services leadership team to enhance the efficiency and responsiveness of services in accordance with the University's mission and strategic goals.
Contribute to team meetings and initiatives, sharing information promptly and maintaining transparency in decision-making processes.
Identify and pursue opportunities for ongoing professional development for yourself and colleagues within the Research Culture and Researcher Development portfolio.
Perform additional duties as assigned, in line with the position's grade level and in agreement with management regarding prioritization.
Essential:
- A1 PhD.
- A2 Comprehensive understanding of academic and EAL writing support within higher education.
- A3 In-depth knowledge of academic publishing pathways, thesis requirements, and research funding processes across various disciplines.
- A4 Awareness of digital literacy and academic integrity issues related to writing.
- A5 Understanding of the emotional and wellbeing challenges associated with doctoral studies and their impact on EAL-PGR writing.
- A6 Familiarity with theories of academic literacies, adult learning, and instructional design, including the role of technology in effective training.

- B1 Knowledge of University of Glasgow's structures, policies, and practices related to researcher support.

- E4 Experience in organizing large-scale events or long-term development programs.
- E5 Proven track record in designing communication strategies to promote initiatives and events.

The salary for this position is Grade 7, ranging from £39,347 to £44,263 per annum. This is a full-time role, comprising 35 hours per week, and is fixed-term for a duration of up to 2 years.
