Job Summary: We are seeking a highly skilled Principal Optical Systems Engineer to join our R&D team at Octagon Group. As a technical lead, you will be responsible for designing and developing complex scientific instrumentation and leading a team of engineers in the development of new products.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with stakeholders to define system design and specification, covering concept development, design calculations or modelling for optical, mechanical, electronic or algorithmic aspects of the system.
  • Manage design verification activities, including running design reviews, as well as design and execution of test plans for prototype evaluation.
  • Investigate manufacturing/field failures to determine root cause and initiate remedial actions.
  • Understand products' performance parameters at the system and sub-system level.
  • Guide junior staff members in executing test plans and interpreting results.
  • Participate in troubleshooting activities, including root cause analysis, for new product development and ongoing manufacturing issues.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Physics or a related subject.
  • Extensive experience in the design, troubleshooting, and manufacture of optical equipment.
  • Experience in technical leadership roles.
  • Experience of working within a structured development program.
  • High level of engineering, physics, and maths knowledge.
  • Ability to use complex software.

About the Role: As a Principal Optical Systems Engineer at Octagon Group, you will have the opportunity to work on complex scientific products and lead a team of engineers in the development of new products. You will be responsible for designing and developing instrumentation and leading the development of new products from concept to manufacture.
