Req ID: 454709

Location: Bletchley

Appointment Basis: Permanent

Salary + Benefits: CIRCA £57,000

At Alstom, we are dedicated to enhancing transport networks and facilitating mobility. Our extensive portfolio includes high-speed trains, metros, monorails, trams, and comprehensive systems, services, infrastructure, signalling, and digital mobility solutions. Our 80,000 colleagues worldwide are committed to advancing greener and smarter mobility, connecting cities while reducing carbon emissions and reliance on cars.

Alstom stands as the foremost supplier of new trains, train services, and signalling infrastructure projects in the UK & Ireland. We have constructed nearly 40% of the UK's mainline train fleet and are responsible for all fleets currently in operation with London Underground and Dublin's LUAS.

We are undertaking the largest train program in the UK in a generation – AVENTRA – for seven of the country's major train operating companies, while also ramping up production for the next generation of Greater Dublin's commuter trains, DART+, and 54 HS2 high-speed trains in a Joint Venture. Alstom also supports 66% of the UK fleet through its Services division and is the leading provider of CP6 signalling and infrastructure solutions in the UK.

With a workforce of 6,000 across the UK and Ireland, we design, manufacture, and test trains at the largest end-to-end train manufacturing facility in Derby, alongside major sites in Widnes, Crewe, Ilford, and Plymouth, and 30 train service depots throughout the UK and Ireland.

Your future role

As a Higher Technician, you will play a crucial role in ensuring Alstom meets its contractual obligations for the maintenance and operational efficiency of the new Aventra Class 730 Fleet.

You will be responsible for adhering to Vehicle Maintenance Instructions (VMI) and Vehicle Maintenance Procedures (VMP), ensuring all train systems function according to specifications. Your duties will include investigating issues, diagnosing potential train faults, providing on-train technical support, conducting thorough fault analysis and rectification, performing static functional testing, and generating train test reports.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Communicate effectively with customers and colleagues

  • Collaborate with Outstation and ISST roles
  • Develop and provide work instructions
  • Offer technical support to depot teams for fault finding and train repair activities
  • Manage campaigns for fleet software updates
  • Utilize fault analysis tools (Fleet Monitor, OTDR, System fault log analysis)
  • Follow and execute tasks in line with VMI's and VMP's
  • Facilitate off-site operations within the network
  • Provide on-train technical assistance
  • Support customer operational needs
  • Document and report faults using web-based and app-based systems
  • Identify, define, and implement modifications to enhance reliability and serviceability

  • Assist in skills development within depots and train care points
  • Organize and conduct test runs to aid in fault resolution, particularly for recurring issues
  • Functionally test train systems with minimal supervision using various diagnostic techniques
  • Review and amend test specifications and documentation for functional tests
  • Assist in validating documentation for maintenance and repair activities, special checks, modifications, and experiments
  • Support the validation of Maintenance Schedule amendments and other technical instructions
  • Validate locally produced technical instructions
  • Provide technical support for special checks and experiments

About You

We prioritize passion and attitude over experience. While we do not expect you to possess every skill, we have outlined some that will contribute to your success and growth in this role:

  • HNC/HND in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering is preferable
  • GNVQ Level 3 in an Electrical-based industry (Rail, Aerospace, Military) is required
  • Previous experience in rolling stock is advantageous

  • Proficient IT skills in Microsoft Office

Benefits

We offer a competitive remuneration package, including 25 days of annual leave plus bank holidays, with the option to buy or sell holiday. Additional benefits include contributed healthcare, life assurance, an excellent company-contributed pension scheme, and a variety of flexible benefits tailored to your lifestyle.
