Position Overview

Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust is looking for a Senior Rheumatology Consultant to join our dedicated team at North Tyneside General Hospital. This role is integral to the provision of a comprehensive, multi-disciplinary Rheumatology Service across the Trust.

The successful candidate will enhance the existing consultant team, bringing their unique expertise to deliver exceptional Rheumatology care to the communities of North Tyneside and Northumberland. Collaboration with a multi-disciplinary team is essential to ensure the highest standards of patient care.

Key Responsibilities

The role will involve a flexible timetable designed to meet service demands, with the potential for adjustments as the service evolves.

The full-time work schedule will encompass 10 Programmed Activities (PAs), which will include:

  • Clinical Care
  • Supporting Professional Activities

Weekly commitments will include:

  • Direct Clinical Care (including outpatient consultations, administrative duties, and clinical multidisciplinary team meetings)
  • Supporting Professional Activities

The Trust is committed to supporting ongoing professional development in line with Royal College standards, providing both time and financial resources for these activities.

A proposed job plan will be discussed and agreed upon at the start of the appointment.

As a lead/primary appraiser, the consultant will be responsible for medical appraisals within the service, ensuring that all medical staff complete their annual appraisals in accordance with Trust policies and GMC standards.

Job Responsibilities

The consultant will share responsibility for delivering Rheumatology services to the Northumbria population. Candidates are encouraged to develop a special interest that complements the department's expertise and will collaborate with management and colleagues to optimize service efficiency.

Responsibilities include:

  • Managing personal workload to meet service contract levels.
  • Participating in shared cover arrangements for colleagues during leave periods.
  • Providing ongoing clinical responsibility for patients and facilitating communication among staff with delegated duties.
  • Maintaining awareness of organizational priorities and effectively communicating these to colleagues.
  • Engaging in constructive discussions about organizational matters with management.
  • Balancing loyalty to the service and organization while anticipating changes in the healthcare landscape.
  • Understanding the broader health economy and its implications for the Trust.

Qualifications

Essential:

  • MRCP
  • Full registration on the UK General Medical Council's Specialist Register for Rheumatology; Specialist Registrars may apply if within 6 months of CCT at the time of interview.
  • Full accreditation with the appropriate Royal College.
  • Full GMC Registration.

Experience and Knowledge

Essential:

  • Clinical training and experience in Rheumatology, equivalent to that required for entry to the UK Certificate of Completed Training (CCT).
  • High standard of clinical skill and expertise in Rheumatology.
  • Experience in Clinical Governance.
  • Expertise in a sub-specialty.

Teaching

Essential:

  • Experience and commitment to teaching undergraduate and postgraduate medical staff.

Desirable:

  • Experience in teaching non-medical health professionals.
  • Educational qualifications in teaching.

Management & Administrative

Desirable:

  • Experience in audit management.

Research, Audit and Clinical Governance

Essential:

  • Evaluative and critical appraisal skills.
  • Commitment to medical audit.

Desirable:

  • Publications in peer-reviewed journals.

Continued Professional / Personal Development

Essential:

  • Demonstrable evidence of lifelong learning.
  • Participation in relevant peer review processes.
