Position Overview

We invite applications for the role of Senior Haematology Consultant. The Haematology team in the South of Tyne is dedicated to delivering exceptional, comprehensive care for individuals with blood disorders, ensuring a well-structured service that is enjoyable to be part of.

Our department consists of a team of 7 Consultants affiliated with the South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust, alongside an additional Consultant from a partner institution. We offer both clinical and laboratory services, with collaborative efforts to enhance patient care.

In-patient responsibilities at the designated hospital include managing acute leukaemia treatment and overseeing patients receiving autologous stem cell transplants. Out-patient services are available across multiple locations, with day units providing chemotherapy treatments.

We extend our expertise to General Practitioners and other medical specialties, offering consultations and reporting on diagnostic tests such as bone marrow biopsies and blood films. Our team also manages non-malignant paediatric haematology cases and provides specialized services for young adults with malignant conditions, in partnership with regional centers.

We seek a colleague who shares our commitment to excellence in Haematology. Candidates with specialized interests in research, Haemato-Oncology, paediatric Haematology, transfusion medicine, laboratory diagnostics, and medical education are particularly encouraged to apply.

Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be primarily based at the main hospital, with responsibilities that include:

  • Participating in a 1 in 7 on-call rotation for managing in-patient Haematology cases.
  • Providing non-resident overnight on-call support once a week.
  • Conducting 2-3 adult Haematology clinics weekly, addressing a variety of conditions.
  • Reviewing patients in day units.
  • Prescribing chemotherapy for in-patients and out-patients.
  • Offering guidance to General Practitioners.
  • Participating in ward rounds for Haematology patients.
  • Reporting on laboratory tests, including bone marrow biopsies and blood films.
  • Attending weekly Consultant Grand Rounds and multidisciplinary team meetings.

While this is a full-time position, we welcome applications from those interested in part-time opportunities.

Qualifications and Experience

Applicants should possess:

  • Membership of the Royal College of Physicians and Fellowship of the Royal College of Pathologists.
  • Full registration with the General Medical Council, including a license to practice.
  • A Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) or equivalent.
