Role Overview

We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Mechanical Engineer to join our team at Diamond Light Source. This position offers a unique chance to contribute to the development of a cutting-edge cryo-sample transfer and storage automation system.

The primary responsibility of this role is to spearhead the engineering innovation and advancements necessary for the creation of sample holder formats, cassettes, and shipping containers that are essential for the automation enhancement. Key responsibilities include:

  • Developing creative and innovative engineering solutions.
  • Creating detailed engineering designs using CAD software.
  • Conducting Static Structural Analysis through analytical methods and FEA tools.
  • Performing Thermal and Cryogenic Analysis utilizing both analytical techniques and FEA tools.
  • Executing mechanical, thermal, and motion system testing and validation of prototypes.
  • Managing project documentation and files to ensure all relevant information is organized and accessible.
  • Leading risk assessments and implementing strategies to mitigate identified risks.

Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate will possess a degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent substantial experience in the field.

Preferred qualifications include:

  • Experience in designing systems that function under extreme conditions, such as Ultra High Vacuum and cryogenic environments.
  • Proficiency in engineering drawings and 3D modeling, with familiarity in modern manufacturing processes, including additive manufacturing.
  • Knowledge of risk assessment protocols and an understanding of directives such as the Machinery Directive.
  • Experience collaborating with multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Strong communication skills, enabling effective discussion of ideas, presentation of solutions, and collaboration throughout project phases.
  • Hands-on experience in research and development activities.

Candidates who may not have direct experience in all areas will still be considered if they can demonstrate a solid understanding of the fundamental physical principles during the interview, along with a willingness to learn.
