Research Fellow in 3D Scanning of Railways

We are seeking a highly motivated and versatile Research Fellow to join our team at the University of Leeds. As part of the XCROSS project, you will work on developing novel 3D scanning technologies for railway track Switches and Crossings.

About the Role

You will be working closely with Professor David Connolly to conduct novel research and international impact activities. This will include identifying hardware and software requirements for in-situ 3D scanning of crossings, performing laser scans at several railway sites in Europe, and developing 3D point cloud manipulation, artificial intelligence, and computer vision algorithms to process 3D scanned crossing datasets.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct research and development of novel 3D scanning technologies for railway track Switches and Crossings
  • Work with an international consortium to identify hardware and software requirements for in-situ 3D scanning of crossings
  • Perform laser scans at several railway sites in Europe
  • Develop 3D point cloud manipulation, artificial intelligence, and computer vision algorithms to process 3D scanned crossing datasets
Requirements

You will have a PhD (or submitted your thesis before taking up the role) in a railway engineering related discipline or an area related to 3D scanning or computer vision. This role will be based at the University of Leeds campus and there is scope for it to be undertaken in a hybrid manner. We are open to discussing flexible working arrangements.
