Position Overview

We are looking for a Band 7 Expert Cardiac Physiologist to become a vital member of our team at Great Western Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

Our department conducts a comprehensive array of both invasive and non-invasive cardiac physiology assessments, including stress echocardiography, transesophageal echocardiography, and physiology-led valve and bubble clinics. We are also engaged in research initiatives in the fields of echocardiography and pacing, and we perform device implantations for CRT and ICD.

The successful candidate will independently execute and interpret a variety of diagnostic tests.

You will offer specialized guidance and training to both physiologists and other healthcare professionals within our multidisciplinary team.

Key Responsibilities

Development, Planning, and Service Enhancement:

a. Collaborate closely with Cardiac Physiology Service Managers, fellow highly specialized cardiac physiologists, and lead clinicians on a daily basis.

b. Develop and facilitate the implementation of standard operating procedures and guidelines within the department to ensure effective service delivery.

c. Regularly review these guidelines to keep them updated in accordance with current research and national/local standards.

d. Stay informed about best practice guidelines in cardiac physiology and utilize this knowledge to assist in service development.

Clinical Responsibilities:

a. Maintain extensive knowledge and expertise in cardiac physiology.

b. Conduct, interpret, and report on advanced cardiac diagnostic tests, such as cardiac ultrasound and cardiac rhythm management devices, providing insights to patients, clinicians, and specialists.

c. Train, develop, and evaluate junior staff members to ensure skill maintenance and adherence to service delivery standards.

d. Perform clinical investigations in accordance with both local and nationally established standards.

e. Ensure timely communication of factual reports on clinical investigation results to referring physicians based on clinical urgency.

f. Responsible for data entry, text processing, and data management using a computerized data entry system.

g. Support the development of new procedures and investigations while fostering staff development.

h. Maintain current ILS certification.

Qualifications

Essential:

  • BSc Honours Clinical Physiology (Cardiology) or equivalent
  • Current postgraduate professional qualification, including IBHRE / HRUK accreditation
  • Demonstrated ongoing professional development and up-to-date clinical practice
  • Ability to perform and report on advanced cardiac rhythm management devices, troubleshooting and programming both ICD and CRT devices according to departmental and current best practice guidelines.

Desirable:

  • Capability to work independently in various areas of cardiac physiology beyond primary interests, such as performing and/or assisting in DSE, ESE, and TOE, and reporting on 3D echo and adult congenital heart disease scans.
  • Teaching and assessor qualifications
  • RCCP or HCPC registration
  • Second postgraduate professional Adult BSE accreditation

Experience

Essential:

  • Significant postgraduate experience in non-invasive cardiac investigations, supported by theoretical knowledge and relevant practical experience
  • Ability to supervise both medical and physiology staff in training in advanced CRM, ensuring all devices are tested and programmed according to current best practice guidelines
  • Financial awareness
  • Knowledge of developing operational policies
  • Experience in team leadership
  • Experience in collaborative team working

Desirable:

  • Experience in all areas of invasive cardiac investigations, underpinned by theoretical knowledge and relevant practical experience
  • Experience in teaching and assessing invasive and/or non-invasive cardiac investigations

Knowledge

Essential:

  • Demonstrated awareness of current issues in cardiology
  • IT literate
  • Excellent verbal and non-verbal communication skills
