Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Biomedical Scientist to join our Haematology team at Health Services Laboratories. The successful candidate will be responsible for managing staff and sections within the department, ensuring the maintenance of scientific standards and providing an efficient and effective service.

Main Responsibilities
  1. Staff Management: Supervise and manage various grades of scientific and support staff, providing guidance and support to ensure the smooth operation of the department.
  2. Laboratory Operations: Participate in all areas of laboratory bench work, adhering to standard operating procedures and contributing to their regular review and update.
  3. Testing and Analysis: Conduct a range of tests and analyses, including Full Blood Counts, Malaria antigen and morphology testing, Routine coagulation testing, Blood film morphology, Glandular Fever testing, Haemoglobinopathy testing, and HbA1c testing.
  4. Result Communication: Communicate patient results and answer enquiries from healthcare professionals, providing information on appropriate investigations and explanations of results within departmental guidelines and professional code of conduct.
  5. Specimen Preparation and Analysis: Prepare and analyze specimens for a range of sample types, using scientific knowledge to process specimens for appropriate tests.
  6. Quality Control and Assurance: Evaluate and monitor the accuracy and precision of laboratory investigations using quality control procedures, ensuring the department meets all UKAS standards.
  7. Training and Education: Train new laboratory and clinical staff, acquiring an up-to-date knowledge of developments in the discipline and pathology, and identifying training needs within the team.
Requirements
  1. Proven experience in a senior scientific role, with a strong background in Haematology.
  2. Excellent leadership and management skills, with the ability to motivate and guide staff.
  3. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to interpret complex scientific data.
  4. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with healthcare professionals and other stakeholders.
  5. Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, with a strong attention to detail and ability to prioritize tasks.
