Astronomical Data Scientist

Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, United Kingdom University of Cambridge Full time

The Opportunity

We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled Astronomical Data Scientist to join our team at the Cambridge Astronomical Survey Unit (CASU) within the Institute of Astronomy. This is an exciting chance to contribute to cutting-edge spectroscopic analysis for major astronomical surveys.

About the Role

  • Develop novel scientific algorithms and applications for analyzing spectroscopic data from groundbreaking projects like WEAVE, MOONS, and 4MOST.
  • Monitor instrument performance and data quality, ensuring the success of large-scale surveys.
  • Collaborate with project teams and external researchers to optimize data interpretation and usage.
  • Contribute to documentation, user manuals, and research programs within CASU's astronomical and medical initiatives.

Your Expertise

You will possess a PhD in astronomy or a related field with a strong foundation in computing and programming. Familiarity with astronomical data acquisition, reduction techniques, databases, and web-based systems is essential. Experience in software development for large-scale spectroscopic surveys is highly desirable.

Proficiency in Python for database querying, data manipulation, visualization, numerical analysis, and statistical modeling is a must. Experience with 'big data' handling, machine learning, and distributed team environments is advantageous. Systems engineering knowledge would also be beneficial.

The Impact

This role offers the unique opportunity to work at the forefront of astronomical research, contributing to world-leading facilities like the William Herschel Telescope (WEAVE), VISTA (4MOST), and VLT (MOONS). Your work will directly influence the scientific discoveries made through these groundbreaking surveys.
