Job Summary

We are seeking a motivated and proactive individual to fill the role of GP Assistant. The successful candidate will be responsible for providing administrative and clinical support to our clinical team, ensuring the smooth operation of our clinics and enabling our clinicians to focus on patient care.

Key Responsibilities
  • Sort and prioritize clinical post for the General Practitioner, ensuring timely and effective action.
  • Signpost clinical post to relevant staff members, such as clinical pharmacists.
  • Extract and code information from clinical letters, adding to patient notes as necessary.
  • Arrange appointments, referrals, tests, and follow-up appointments for patients.
  • Prepare patients for consultations, taking brief histories and basic readings as required.
  • Take blood pressure, perform phlebotomy, and conduct urine dipstick tests, sending off samples as necessary and informing patients of normal results.
  • Escalate abnormal results to relevant clinicians or duty doctors.
  • Conduct new patient review clinics, aiming to meet quality and outcomes framework targets and perform necessary medical observations.
  • Complete basic forms and core elements of some forms for the GP to approve and sign.
  • Explain treatment procedures to patients.
  • Assist the GP in liaising with external agencies, obtaining advice or arranging admissions as necessary.
  • Administer vaccinations.
  • Contact non-responders to national screening programs.
  • Assist the GP in completing shared care agreements and sending out relevant safety net letters to patients.
  • Complete 2-week rule referrals, booking appointments on the clinical system and completing necessary safety net measures.
  • Complete C&B referrals for A&E or ACU, extracting relevant information from EMIS notes.
  • Undertake additional duties as requested by the GP or clinical team.
Person Specification

We are looking for a candidate with the following skills and qualifications:

  • Excellent communication skills (written and oral)
  • Strong IT skills
  • Clear and polite telephone manner
  • Competent in the use of Microsoft Office and Outlook
  • Effective time management and planning skills
  • Ability to work as a team member and autonomously
  • Good knowledge of community health and social care systems
  • Problem-solving and analytical skills
  • Ability to work with confidential and sensitive information, understanding boundaries
  • Ability to communicate effectively and professionally with patients and colleagues

Desirable qualifications and experience include:

  • Awareness of medical terminology
  • Experience of working in a healthcare setting
  • Competent in the use of EMIS software
  • Experience of carrying out phlebotomy and lifestyle checks

We require a driver with their own transport and a DBS check.

The ideal candidate will be able to operate independently, manage their workload effectively, and provide empathy and understanding to patients. A compassionate and positive attitude is essential for this role.
