Job Summary

We are seeking an experienced and skilled Acute Medicine Consultant to join our team at Barts Health NHS Trust. As a key member of our Emergency Medicine department, you will be responsible for providing high-quality patient care and leading our Acute Assessment Unit.

Key Responsibilities
  • Participate actively in direct clinical management and oversee care provided by junior medical and non-medical staff.
  • Be responsible for patients admitted to the Clinical Decision Units under the auspices of the Emergency Department.
  • Undertake ward rounds to ensure that patients are either discharged or referred to a specialty team for onward care if admission is likely to exceed 12 hours.
  • Have clinical responsibility for patients in the above-named areas under the care of Emergency Medicine and ensure a clear handover is provided to colleagues taking over from them at the end of their shift.
  • Participate in clinical administration, such as answering complaints, checking results, and recalling patients as needed.
  • Attend senior team meetings, Clinical Governance meetings, and other relevant Emergency Department meetings.
  • Contribute to the wider management aspects of the department, including future and annual planning, improving performance against local and national targets, and taking on responsibility for an aspect of the service.
  • Develop good working relationships with specialist teams, support services, and Primary Care colleagues to ensure patients are encouraged to access care from the most appropriate agency to meet their needs.
  • Be involved in the updating of Standard Operational Policies and departmental clinical policies.
  • Be involved in service development and Quality Improvement work, supported by the Clinical Lead and resources on site.
Requirements
  • Entry on the Specialist Register in Emergency Medicine, or evidence that the applicant can produce evidence that they are within six months of CCT date and are expected to achieve CCT.
  • Appropriate level of experience with evidence of continual professional development, quality improvement, and annual appraisals.
  • Able to manage patients with ongoing medical and surgical critical care needs in the resuscitation room.
  • Experience in Acute Medicine and/or other acute specialties.
  • Evidence of completing the audit cycle or completing a quality improvement project.
  • Quality improvement training.
  • Understanding of risk as it relates to Emergency Medicine, with evidence of risk management.
  • Quality assurance.
  • Experience of undergraduate and Postgraduate teaching.
  • Written a curriculum and developed a training program.
  • Evidence of appropriate development towards clinical supervision.
  • Understands the importance of research and evidence-based medicine.
  • Paper presented at Academic meetings.
