Job Overview

The East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Medical Oncologist to join our team. As a Speciality Doctor, you will be responsible for providing high-quality oncology services to patients, working closely with our multidisciplinary team to deliver excellent patient care.

Main Duties
  • Manage a wide range of acute medical and oncological emergencies
  • Provide routine prescribing of protocol-based chemotherapy regimes
  • Deal with both routine and emergency attenders
  • Work as a core member of the hospital acute oncology team, including review of patients on our Medical Assessment Units and patients admitted to outlying wards
  • Undertake procedures as required, with training provided if necessary
  • Be involved in complex clinical, patient management problems and multi-disciplinary planning treatment
  • Ensure all dictation of clinic letters is performed within 24 hours
  • Use the Trust's Cancer Clinical Database to record all oncology annotations
  • Contribute to service developments
  • Participate in continuing medical education and clinical audits
  • Participate in the consenting and follow-up of patients in clinical trials, with appropriate Consultant supervision
  • Provide support to the complaints process

Detailed Job Description and Main Responsibilities

The Cancer Services Directorate is a fully established cancer service with a strong team of clinicians, nurses, and support staff. As a Medical Oncologist, you will be working closely with our team to deliver high-quality patient care and contribute to the development of our services.

Person Specification
  • Full registration with the General Medical Council
  • MRCPCH or MRCP Part 1
Desirable Criteria
  • MRCP
  • A higher qualification, such as an MD or MSc
Training
  • Evidence of achievement of Foundation competencies by time of appointment, in line with GMC standards in Good Medical Practice
  • Attendance at appropriate professional meetings and courses
  • Completed at least 2 years of medical training in a specialty training programme in a relevant specialty or equivalent experience and competencies
Experience
  • Management of wide range of acute medical and oncological emergencies
  • Evidence of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and commitment to these within the Trust
  • Understanding of an experience performing audit during general professional and higher specialist training
  • Awareness of basic research methods
  • Familiarity with evidence-based practice
Continuing Professional Development
  • Clear commitment to lifelong learning
  • Experience of evidence-based medicine
  • Ability to keep up to date in the specialty
Management
  • Understanding of current NHS management systems, including clinical governance and risk management
  • Attendance at management meetings
Personal Skills
  • Ability to communicate and liaise effectively with patients, their parents, and other relatives, and with colleagues and staff in all disciplines
  • Experience of supervision of junior staff
  • Ability to lead the development of services and provoke best practice amongst colleagues
  • Ability to work in a team with professional colleagues, both medical and from other disciplines
