Role Overview
This position holds the comprehensive responsibility for the conceptualization, execution, and management of all facets of talent enhancement, performance, coaching, and competitive development initiatives.
The Director of Competitive Development will oversee, coordinate, and propel talent, performance, and development efforts within and in collaboration with the Motorsport UK Academy and the newly established 'Developing Driver Programme'. This role also includes supervising the creation and integration of a Coach education pathway and accreditation framework.
Key Responsibilities
- Ultimate accountability for the talent pathway, coaching, and broader competitive development, including the formulation, evolution, integration, and execution of a competitor development strategy.
- Engage with colleagues, organizations, and specialists in talent, performance, and sports development from key funding partners, successful motorsport nations, and other sports to comprehend existing pathway systems and the programs that support them, their effectiveness, and developmental needs; and establish essential components and requirements of an effective development pathway.
- Manage and lead the Academy and Coaching program consultants/contractors, practitioners, and studentships (PhD) to ensure strategic outcomes are achieved.
- Collaborate with the Head of Safeguarding, Head of Sustainability, and relevant departments to ensure safeguarding practices and EDI are integrated throughout all pathway delivery.
- Overall responsibility for the oversight and monitoring of the competitive development budget.
- Manage external partnerships ensuring both parties meet the obligations arising from their agreements and the needs of the competitive development programs.
- Establish, implement, and report on short and long-term KPIs.
- Oversee Communication and Marketing priorities within the context of competitive development.
Academy Responsibilities
- Design, implement, and lead a talent and performance strategy, assessing the overall effectiveness of the Motorsport UK Academy and introducing innovative ideas to enhance the value of the programs for competitors.
- Lead the relationship between Motorsport UK, Sport England, and Loughborough College regarding the delivery of the Diploma in Sporting Excellence (DiSE).
- Ensure the provision and availability of support services (sports psychology, human performance, nutrition, etc.) and collaborate with experts to integrate a progressive curriculum across all programs.
- Lead on FIA talent programs (such as FIA Karting Academy Trophy, Rally Star, Rising Stars, Motorsport Games) and facilitate opportunities for talent identification at both national and international levels.
- Conduct innovative specialist projects to address critical talent gaps identified in the talent/performance pipeline and/or develop strategies that may expedite movement through the pathway, such as talent transfer, cross-sport opportunities, and leadership development.
- Create monitoring and review processes for drivers/co-drivers' performances and individual development plans.
- Oversee the broader talent development provision, for instance, supporting junior level championships to enhance the potential for progression within the sport.
- Facilitate discrete research projects that provide a greater evidence base for understanding Talent Identification markers and performance development patterns in motorsport.
- Oversee a national tracking and monitoring system that allows for the objective quantification of a driver/co-driver's individual progression against a winning trajectory.
- Ensure alignment of a competitor talent ID process across the competitor's pathway with consistent selection criteria and policy.
Coaching Responsibilities
- Promote the development of a coaching pathway and culture within the competitor pathway structure, aiming for coaching to be central to motorsport at every level from grassroots to elite.
- Oversee the coach development strategy that considers the future sustainability of the motorsport coaching workforce, ensuring all competitors have access to suitably qualified coaches at the appropriate stages of their development.
- Collaborate with colleagues to support the integration of Motorsport UK-led coaching education and provision, engaging with Association schools (ARDS, ARKS, BARS) to review and enhance the existing infrastructure.
- Oversee the process of Motorsport UK becoming a 1st4Sport recognized center to facilitate the Certificate in Coaching Motorsport qualification into an 'internal' delivery model.
- Ensure the programs are financially sustainable in the long term and plan the commercial viability of further qualification levels and CPD offerings.
- Work with the Commercial Team to identify additional partners for the program and provide further benefits for qualified coaches to remain engaged with the pathway.
Competitive Development Responsibilities
- Oversee the design and implementation of the new 'Developing Driver Programme', ensuring that enjoyment is central to the participant development offerings.
- Hold overall responsibility for talent inclusion and participation projects and other EDI initiatives identified through research and review of motorsport's new and existing participant base.
- Build and maintain effective relationships with key external partners, such as association schools, championships, teams, regions, and clubs.
- Lead and support the creation and development of a clear framework centralized to the sport that articulates the guiding principles of developing drivers/co-drivers.
- Collaborate with colleagues, experts, and partners to develop a range of resources, training aids, and tools to support competitors, promoting a holistic approach to the development of competitors and coaches.
Qualifications and Experience
- Graduate or graduate level in a relevant field. Additional postgraduate qualification or relevant experience is preferable.
- Relevant coaching qualifications are desirable.
Previous Experience
- Extensive experience and expertise in performance and talent development within the sports sector.
- Experience managing relationships and programs in a sports performance, talent, and coaching environment.
- Knowledge and experience in coach development and sports development.
- Proven ability to seek out new knowledge and expertise to positively influence innovative and world-leading performance, talent, and coach development programs.
- Experience and knowledge of coach and competitor/participant education structures.
- Expertise in developing strategy and translating it into operational delivery.
- Experience delivering a strategy in a multi-stakeholder environment.
- Demonstrated track record of delivering results.
Personal Attributes
- An understanding of sports development, coaching, and talent development and performance in the UK and international motorsport would be advantageous.
- Ability to work strategically without close supervision.
- Capability to manage a large work program, prioritize tasks, and achieve targets.
- An understanding of sponsorship and commercial relationships in sport is desirable.
