Position Overview

University Hospitals Bristol & Weston NHS Foundation Trust (UHBW) is dedicated to providing exceptional palliative care and support for children and their families. We are seeking a passionate and skilled individual to join our team as a Band 6 Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) within the Paediatric Palliative Care & Bereavement Support unit.

The ideal candidate will collaborate with current team members to enhance the delivery of paediatric palliative care and bereavement assistance. This role involves providing specialized knowledge in complex decision-making, advance care planning, and comprehensive symptom management.

Our commitment is to deliver high-quality, holistic care for infants, children, and adolescents facing life-limiting or life-threatening conditions, as well as their families, from the point of diagnosis through to end-of-life care. This is achieved through a model that emphasizes empowerment and support, ensuring that all staff possess the necessary skills and knowledge to provide top-tier care. Additionally, the team coordinates bereavement support for families following the loss of a child.

Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be responsible for:

  • Offering professional and clinical guidance to nursing and medical personnel regarding palliative care and bereavement.
  • Providing expert consultation on symptom management.
  • Acting as an ambassador for paediatric palliative care when engaging with external professionals.
  • Facilitating the development and implementation of evidence-based paediatric palliative care practices in accordance with advance care planning and relevant guidelines.
  • Promoting family-centered palliative care through collaboration with multidisciplinary teams.
  • Encouraging timely discussions with families to ensure they have choices regarding care options.
  • Supporting children with palliative care needs and their families during their hospital stay.
  • Engaging with professionals from children's hospices, community settings, and other agencies.

Qualifications & Experience

Essential:

  • Relevant post-registration nursing experience, particularly in caring for families with palliative care needs.
  • Demonstrated leadership and management capabilities.

Desirable:

  • Experience in teaching and mentoring.
  • Engagement in research-based practice or project work.
  • Experience as a preceptor or mentor.

Skills & Competencies

  • Proficiency in medication administration, including intravenous therapies.

Training & Qualifications

Essential:

  • Registered Sick Children's Nurse (RSCN) or Registered General Nurse (RGN).
  • Bachelor's degree in nursing or a related health field, or a willingness to pursue one.
  • Current NMC Registration.

Desirable:

  • Accredited post-registration qualification in palliative care.
  • Qualification in teaching, assessing, and mentoring.
  • Willingness to pursue master's level academic studies.
