About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled Software Engineer III to join our Site Reliability Engineering & Application Support (SRE & AS) team at American Express. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for leading the development and implementation of non-functional requirements, participating in architecture and engineering discussions, and providing operational support with building platform monitoring tools and dashboards.

Key Responsibilities
  • Technical Leadership: Serve as a member of an agile development team, driving discovery, build, and implementation of non-functional requirements.
  • Architecture and Engineering: Actively participate in architecture and engineering discussions to ensure alignment with company goals and objectives.
  • Code Reviews and Pair Programming: Participate in code reviews, ad-hoc pair programming, and contribute to iterative improvement of tools, automation, and practices used by the team.
  • Operational Support: Provide operational support with building platform monitoring tools and dashboards, as well as ad-hoc reports.
  • Recovery Tooling: Build, implement, and advise on recovery tooling to adhere to enterprise standards and/or frameworks.
  • Availability and Monitoring: Ensure application data flows are accurate and up-to-date, with a focus on increasing the knowledge base of all support teams and driving reliability.
  • Non-Application Issues: Facilitate the resolution of non-application issues, including 3rd party upstream issues, infrastructure issues, storage, database, network, and file transfer issues.
Requirements
  • Education: Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or equivalent work experience.
  • Experience: 2+ years of experience coding with Java, Python, Node, or a similar language, with a strong desire to learn new languages. Experience with ML is a plus.
  • Technical Skills: Excellent coding and scripting skills, knowledge of CICD tools (Jenkins, Gitlab, and Artifactory), experience with monitoring/alerting/logging solutions (Splunk, Datadog, AWS, GCP Stackdriver, etc.), and experience with databases (Couchbase, PostgreSQL).
  • Cloud Experience: Experience in a public cloud environment, with experience in designing and building cloud-native applications, and hands-on experience with Kubernetes.
  • Technical Knowledge: High degree of technical knowledge, ranging across several technologies, including platform enablers (Prometheus, Consul, Vault, ELK) and infrastructure platforms (Cloud, networking, and storage).
  • Soft Skills: Good communication skills, able to explain concepts to product managers and business partners in ways that are relevant to them, high levels of energy, engagement, and ownership, and a positive attitude.
