About the Role

We are seeking a skilled and compassionate Passenger Assistant to join our School Transport team in West Sussex County Council. As a Passenger Assistant, you will play a vital role in ensuring the safe and secure transportation of vulnerable adults and school children with special needs.

Key Responsibilities

  • Travel to and from schools and other venues, in minibuses, cars, and taxis, to transport passengers safely and efficiently.
  • Provide a safe, secure, and happy environment for passengers during transit, ensuring their wellbeing and comfort at all times.
  • Ensure passengers safely board and alight from vehicles and are delivered to their destination in a safe manner.
  • Work collaboratively with drivers and other Passenger Assistants to ensure smooth and efficient transportation services.
  • Interpret situations and events as they arise to solve problems concerning passenger wellbeing and transportation.

Requirements

  • Excellent communication skills to effectively interact with adults and children with special needs, their carers, family members, and teachers.
  • High levels of patience and sensitivity to deal with adults and children with medical or behavioural needs.
  • Basic literacy and numeracy skills to understand and follow transportation protocols.
  • Able to understand and communicate in basic non-verbal signals, such as pointing to something needed.
  • A basic understanding of Makaton to communicate with passengers with learning difficulties.
