Research Opportunities in Electric Propulsion Systems

At Polytechnicpositions, we are seeking talented individuals to join our Power Electronics, Machines and Drives Research Group at the University of Nottingham. Our team has over 150 members, including 18 academics and approximately 120 PhD students and post-doctoral research fellows. We have excellent facilities for experimental work, including approximately 2500m2 of research space and a construction and testing capability up to 5MW.

Project Overview

We are inviting talented students to develop a real-time digital twin of the fuel-cell electric propulsion system as part of our flagship EU-funded €40M NEWBORN project. The successful candidate will conduct research within a team focusing on innovative electric propulsion systems for future de-carbonised, green aircraft.

Key Responsibilities
  • Review real-time digital twin technology to understand its recent development for electrical engineering applications.
  • Develop a real-time digital twin of the electric propulsion system, including propulsion motors, power converters, fuel cells, and batteries, within the real-time simulation platform.
  • Train the developed digital twin using real-time data from available hardware.
  • Conduct electrical power level studies with the developed digital twin to identify viable solutions for distributed electric propulsion.
Requirements

Applicants should have a first-class degree in Electrical Engineering or Aerospace Engineering with good electrical engineering knowledge. These posts are open to both UK and non-UK students. We offer full international funding for excellent students.
