With a workforce exceeding 3,500 across 20 locations in the UK, we are seeking a seasoned Cybersecurity expert to enhance our capabilities and fulfill departmental goals. This pivotal role is situated within the technology division of the Digital Directorate.

As the leader of our Cybersecurity team, you will oversee daily operations while strategizing improvements to elevate our capabilities. You will hold accountability for the overall assurance of the Department and ensure compliance of our Arms Length Bodies (ALBs) with essential mandates such as GovAssure and Secure by Design. Key responsibilities include:

  • Formulating and advocating a comprehensive cybersecurity strategy that aligns with departmental objectives and risk tolerance, implementing a roadmap to advance our technological maturity and adherence to industry best practices.
  • Managing the execution of cybersecurity risk management protocols, ensuring regular assurance and security assessments of all systems against established KPIs/SLAs.
  • Providing expert cybersecurity guidance to the Department and affiliated bodies, collaborating with key internal and governmental partners to navigate the broader cybersecurity landscape.
  • Leading proactive monitoring and alerting for our systems and services, including conducting exercises to prepare for potential security incidents.
  • Developing and advising on strategies to enhance our risk posture and minimize the attack surface of our systems, ensuring the Department effectively identifies and addresses vulnerabilities.
  • Overseeing the implementation of vulnerability management practices, ensuring that stakeholders operate in accordance with policies to mitigate risks, and coordinating with service managers to ensure timely protection of our systems.
  • Delivering comprehensive reporting to the Department, offering a consolidated view of the threat landscape and risk posture of both the Department and its ALBs.
  • Assuming responsibility for MHCLG GovAssure and overseeing compliance for Arm’s Length Bodies.
  • Leading the creation and maintenance of cybersecurity-related technical documentation for all relevant services and systems.

Candidate Profile

We will evaluate candidates based on the following essential criteria:

  • Strong familiarity with security principles and technologies for cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, and SaaS.
  • Demonstrated experience in managing a multidisciplinary team of cybersecurity professionals.
  • Proven track record in operating a Security Operations Center (SOC), including the development and testing of major incident response plans.
  • Extensive experience in Cybersecurity Information Assurance and Information Risk Management.
  • Technical expertise in establishing a robust security framework to support a zero trust environment in cloud services.
  • In-depth knowledge of common threats and attack vectors, along with effective remediation strategies.
  • Strong problem-solving skills, capable of addressing complex security challenges while ensuring timely delivery within acceptable risk parameters.
  • Understanding of relevant laws, regulations, and industry standards, including GDPR, NCSC CAF, Cyber Essentials, and ISO27001.
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to convey complex security concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Relevant professional certifications such as CISSP, CISM, CRISC, or equivalent experience.
