Job Purpose

The primary responsibility of this role is to oversee all aspects of biological safety at the University of Glasgow's Centre for Virus Research (CVR) within the School of Infection and Immunity.

The individual in this position will play a crucial role in managing research activities with a focus on biological safety matters.

This role involves collaboration with the University Safety and Environmental Protection Service, the UK Health and Safety Executive, and various national and international regulatory bodies.

Additionally, the postholder will serve as the Convenor of the CVR Safety Group, overseeing safety management practices within the CVR and participating in the School Safety Committee.

The postholder will also be an integral member of the CVR Containment Level 3 Management Group. Main Duties and Responsibilities 1.

Oversee all biological safety processes within the CVR, providing leadership and direction to ensure the delivery of an effective and responsive service aligned with organizational goals.

2.

Encourage innovation and improvement, acting as a change agent while regularly reviewing and assessing the application of practices and procedures.

3.

Develop and evaluate processes to ensure compliance with health and safety regulations and legal standards, adaptable to the needs of a National Virology Centre handling various pathogens and responding to emergencies.

4.

Assist CVR researchers in preparing documentation and applications related to biological safety.

5.

Lead efforts on the international import/export of biological specimens and provide guidance to researchers on sample collection and storage in collaboration with CVR stakeholders.

Establish and implement an organizational system for the diverse samples stored at the CVR. 6.

Provide expert biological safety advice (in conjunction with the College of MVLS Biological Safety Manager and/or University Biological Safety Adviser) to all staff levels within the CVR, particularly regarding compliance with health and safety legislation, codes of practice, internal policies, and best practices.

7.

Contribute to the development and execution of an effective safety strategy and procedures within the CVR, considering the University's Strategic Plan, best practices, and legal obligations.

8.

Foster a collaborative approach with the University community and external governing bodies, understanding the business needs and challenges within the CVR and the University to proactively enhance safety performance and organizational flexibility.

9.

Accountable for monitoring and reviewing biological safety arrangements (e.g., inspections, audits, COPs/SOPs) throughout the CVR and preparing relevant management information to demonstrate compliance.

10.

Build and maintain effective working relationships with external enforcement agencies.

11.

Represent the CVR in a managerial biosafety capacity at University Committees and play a significant role in Genetic Modification (GM) safety management as GM Biological Safety Officer (GMBSO).

12.

Develop and maintain an internal and external network to stay informed about current issues, participate in professional development initiatives, and represent the CVR and University at external events.

13.

Act as Convenor of the CVR Safety Group to facilitate all safety-related aspects within the CVR.

14.

Provide specialized input into investigations concerning the causes and consequences of incidents involving biological materials and advise on necessary actions post-investigation.

15.

Oversee general health and safety within the CVR and provide line management for the CVR Health & Safety Officer.

16.

Stay updated with current legislation and practices and undertake relevant training as necessary.

17.

Perform any other reasonable duties as assigned by the line manager.


Knowledge,
Qualifications, Skills and Experience Knowledge/Qualifications Essential: A1. Demonstrated competencies required for this level of position, having acquired the necessary professional knowledge and management skills in similar or multiple specialist roles.

OR:

Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 9, 10, or 11 (Ordinary/Honours Degree, Post Graduate Qualification), or equivalent, including being professionally qualified in a relevant discipline, with extensive professional experience in management roles.

Comprehensive knowledge and understanding of managing biological hazards.


Desirable: B1.

PhD in a biological science, biomedical, or similar discipline (preferably virology).

ISTR Biosafety Practitioner level (BSP) 1 or BSP 2 registered.

A relevant biological safety qualification or professional membership related to biosafety.

National Examination Board in Occupational Safety and Health (NEBOSH) Certification or equivalent.

Additional Details This position is based at the University of Glasgow's Garscube Campus, is full-time (35 hours per week) and open-ended.

Terms and Conditions Salary will be Grade 8, £48,350 - £56,021 per annum. This role is full-time and permanent. Relocation assistance will be provided where appropriate.
