About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Compliance Counsel to join our team at Norton Rose Fulbright. As a key member of our Compliance Department, you will play a critical role in ensuring the firm's compliance with relevant laws and regulations.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conflicts and Confidentiality Management
    • Manage higher risk conflict queries, undertaking conflict searches, analyzing reports, and recommending courses of action to senior management.
    • Ensure new business intake aligns with the firm's global strategy and complies with our existing client base from a legal and commercial standpoint.
    • Liaise with Compliance Teams at Norton Rose Fulbright Member Firms in Australia, Canada, USA, and South Africa in conjunction with potential conflicts.
    • Provide training support and ongoing assistance to Risk and Compliance Officers, offering technical and commercial advice on matters.
    • Communicate policy updates, training, and key business updates to Risk and Compliance officers.
  • Anti-Money Laundering / Sanctions / Risk Analysis
    • Ensure adherence to regulations, such as AML Directives, within the firm.
    • Carry out research on companies, assessing strategic fit, reputational risk, sanctions exposure on potential clients and matters.
    • Provide critical analysis of Risk assessments on clients and matters, including those in high-risk jurisdictions.
    • Recommendations to the Head of Compliance and senior management on whether a high-risk client or matter should be accepted by the firm.
    • Provide training and ongoing assistance to Risk and Compliance Officers in resolving complex conflict issues.
  • Skills and Experience Required
    • Ability to draft clearly and explain complex issues; excellent written and oral communication skills.
    • Sound commercial and risk judgment.
    • At least 4 years' experience working in a compliance/ legal function.
    • Law degree or other relevant qualifications (desirable).
    • Sound understanding of applicable regulations (e.g., SRA, AML, bribery, StaRs, sanctions, tax, practice rights, BHR) and ability to effectively apply these regulations in a pragmatic way.
