Jealott's Hill International Research Centre in the UK is nestled in a serene semi-rural environment, housing approximately 800 Syngenta scientists and support personnel. This site is a pivotal global research and development hub, focusing on the discovery of new active ingredients, innovative formulation technologies, product safety, and technical support for our product offerings.

Position Overview:

The Bioscience Automation Team is in search of a motivated and inventive automation engineer to collaborate closely with scientists across various disciplines, enabling them to leverage our expanding automation platform to tackle new challenges. You will play a key role in addressing these challenges through creative and innovative solutions, establishing automated workflows, and engaging in interdisciplinary projects with a diverse array of colleagues, providing technical expertise to ensure the delivery of solutions relevant to our business. Key responsibilities include:

  • Designing, developing, testing, and troubleshooting workflows on our Tecan Evo liquid handling system.
  • Collaborating with scientists to convert manual processes into automated workflows.
  • Maintaining, diagnosing, and resolving issues related to the liquid handling system.
  • Providing support and training to scientists for running and making minor adjustments to their workflows.
  • Creating standard operating procedures (SOPs) for others to follow.
  • Contributing to the selection and integration of new automation equipment.
  • Assisting Syngenta in advancing towards the laboratory of the future.
Candidate Profile:
  • Proven experience in a similar automation role, preferably within a laboratory setting.
  • Proficient in writing, developing, testing, and troubleshooting workflows on a liquid handling system, ideally a Tecan Evo.
  • Ability to collaborate with scientists to transition manual processes to automated workflows, while providing support and training.
  • Exceptional attention to detail, highly organized, and capable of managing multiple projects concurrently.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to work effectively in multi-functional teams.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • MSc or equivalent experience in a scientific or engineering discipline.
  • Experience in integrating and automating laboratory equipment.
  • Familiarity with programming languages such as Python, C++, C#, R, or SQL.
  • Experience with IoT devices, microcontrollers, single-board computers, or device integration.
  • Familiarity with Synthace.
  • Experience in Design of Experiments (DoE).
  • Background in image analysis.
