Position Overview

We are seeking a dedicated Lead Phlebotomist to support the Phlebotomy Manager in overseeing the daily operations of our Phlebotomy service.

University Hospitals Dorset is looking for an experienced Lead Phlebotomist to join our team.

This position is physically demanding and requires exceptional attention to detail and precision in performing venepuncture. As a Lead Phlebotomist, you will be expected to maintain high standards, demonstrate flexibility, provide support, and serve as a reliable point of contact for your colleagues.

This is a full-time position with a commitment of hours per week.

The service operates Monday through Friday, including weekends and bank holidays as needed.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct venepuncture on adult patients in a friendly, efficient, and professional manner, catering to both inpatients and outpatients.
  • Perform venepuncture across all service locations.
  • Provide training, guidance, and leadership to phlebotomists, acting as a role model under the supervision of the team leader.
  • Effectively prioritize workload to ensure continuous service delivery across the trust.
  • Execute phlebotomy procedures safely, efficiently, and professionally, offering additional support based on patient needs.
  • Work flexibly as a team leader to ensure an effective Phlebotomy Service.
  • Perform venepuncture in all necessary environments.
  • Ensure compliance with security, safety, and confidentiality protocols at all times.
  • Organize daily staff activities.
  • Foster effective working relationships with all staff and clinicians, both within and outside the trust.
  • Encourage and maintain a positive culture and attitude within the department to enable all staff to perform at their best and deliver a high-quality service.

Job Requirements

Experience

Essential

  • A minimum of 2 years of experience within a phlebotomy team.
  • A solid understanding of venepuncture procedures and associated tests.

Desirable

  • Prior experience in a hospital setting.
  • A comprehensive employment history spanning 5 years.

Education

Essential

  • Experience with basic computer and keyboard skills.
  • Qualifications in Mathematics and English.
  • Additional relevant qualifications.

Desirable

  • Up-to-date mandatory training.
