Power Systems Operations Specialist

About the Position
Join us in our commitment to achieving NetZero
Are you eager to engage directly with the Electricity Transmission System within our high voltage infrastructure? If you possess a strong background in Power Systems, this opportunity may be ideal for you.
The Transmission National Control Centre (TNCC) plays a crucial role in our operations. We are excited to offer positions within our Control Centre, where you will become an integral part of the team overseeing the real-time management of the national electricity transmission network.
In this essential role, you will ensure the effective management of the transmission network, facilitating the timely execution of planned activities and responding adeptly to system faults. Your responsibilities will include implementing the system outage plan, monitoring site alarms, conducting Operational and Safety switching tasks, and providing operational support during both planned and unplanned power system events. Additionally, you will have opportunities to offer technical expertise across the organization and assist in planning for upcoming weeks.
This position is critical to Operations and Safety, requiring you to obtain the necessary authorizations before taking on specific responsibilities. We offer a tailored training and authorization program designed to equip you with the confidence and support to excel in this vital role.
These positions are located at the TNCC and involve a shift work schedule, which includes a shift allowance in addition to your base salary.
As a Power Systems Operations Specialist, you will be expected to adhere to a shift pattern (operating hours between 7 AM and 7 PM, including one weekend every four weeks) that is communicated well in advance to promote work-life balance. This role includes a shift allowance of 10.4%. The TNCC operates continuously, requiring a Power Systems Engineer to also participate in a full shift schedule, including night shifts, which offers a higher shift allowance of 26%.
Qualifications
We seek candidates with a background in power systems or control room operations, coupled with a solid understanding of transmission network functionality and analytical techniques. Ideally, you will have experience as a Control Engineer, in a Distribution Network Operator (DNO) control room, or hold Senior Authorised Person (SAP) status.
Your knowledge of the primary plant and protection/control systems utilized within the National Grid electricity framework will be essential, along with a comprehensive understanding of safety regulations, legislation, and relevant procedures. Candidates should possess at least an HNC (or equivalent) in a STEM-related discipline or have comparable experience, along with the ability to perform under pressure while maintaining composure. Strong logical and analytical skills, along with meticulous attention to detail and situational awareness, are crucial.
Benefits
We offer a competitive salary ranging from £51,900 to £65,600, depending on your skills and experience. This includes either a 10.4% partial shift allowance or a 26% full shift allowance.
Employees enjoy 26 days of annual leave, with options to buy or sell holiday days. Additional benefits include 26 weeks of fully paid parental or adoption leave, a back-up care service, and a generous double-matched pension contribution scheme, potentially worth up to 18% of your salary. You will also have the opportunity to purchase discounted shares in National Grid.
Furthermore, we provide financial assistance for educational pursuits and are dedicated to your professional development.
Additional Information
We encourage applications from individuals who may not meet every single requirement listed. Research indicates that women and people of color are less likely to apply unless they meet all qualifications. At National Grid, we are committed to fostering a diverse, inclusive, and authentic workplace for all. If you are enthusiastic about this role but your experience or qualifications do not align perfectly with the job description, we encourage you to apply anyway. You may be the right fit for our expanding team.
