Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Principal Field Engineer to join our managed service team. The successful candidate will be responsible for providing technical expertise to our clients, supporting onsite teams, and managing technical issues on site.

Key Responsibilities

  • Engage in client site visits, providing technical support and guidance to onsite teams.
  • Take ownership of a group of client sites, managing all technical issues on site and serving as the escalation point for technical issues.
  • Deliver high-quality technical expertise to client networks, utilizing best practices and industry standards.
  • Mentor onsite Network Managers and Engineers, assisting in their professional development and providing guidance on technical best practices.
  • Communicate technical information effectively, both verbally and in writing, tailored to the audience.
  • Respond to emergency call outs as required, sometimes beyond normal duty hours.
  • Cover for absent engineers as needed and assist the helpdesk team with escalated issues.
  • Handle incoming issues professionally and courteously, taking ownership of issues/tickets and managing them methodically.
  • Conduct thorough diagnostics with end users to resolve issues/tickets and keep the Service Manager updated on ongoing issues and progress.
  • Support sites with their daily and weekly checks as required and scope requirements for client projects.
  • Participate in the Technical Advisory Group to suggest new systems and standardize implementations across client sites.
  • Lead engineering projects for client sites, providing detailed scopes of work and designs, and delegate tasks to team members on site to ensure project completion on time.
  • Work with the account manager to ensure all equipment is correct and maintain client relations as the face of the project.
  • Self-regulate work and tasks effectively and undertake any other tasks deemed appropriate by Technical Management or Company Directors.

Requirements

  • Hands-on experience with wired and wireless networking, switches, virtual environments, firewalls, web filtering, and advanced troubleshooting.
  • GCSE Grade 5 or above in Maths and English.
  • A-Level, BTEC, NVQ, or T-Level in a relevant subject.
  • Preferred industry qualifications within IT, such as Microsoft, Cisco, Aruba, or Apple.
  • 4-5 years' experience in an IT support environment.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and diagnose issues to determine root causes.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to provide feedback to stakeholders at all levels.
  • Solid understanding of wired and wireless networks and devices.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team under pressure.
  • Impeccable attention to detail and commitment to quality.
  • Experience in the education sector is desirable but not essential.
  • Interpersonal skills sufficient to assist non-technical users of IT.
  • Ability to assess and re-prioritize workloads when circumstances or demands change.
  • Initiative and proactive problem-solving abilities.
