Job Summary

We are seeking a highly motivated and enthusiastic historic buildings specialist to join our team at Essex County Council. As a Built Heritage Specialist, you will contribute to the effective technical delivery of our built heritage specialism, working across Essex, London, and the South East.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide conservation advice to local planning authorities through written responses and meetings.
  • Produce conservation area appraisals and design guidance.
  • Collaborate with our archaeological specialists and Natural and Built Environment teams.
  • Contribute to Built Heritage Statements and Conservation Management Plans.
  • Undertake a diverse range of project work.
Requirements
  • Full UK driving license and access to a car for regular use, or alternative means of mobility.
  • Postgraduate degree in building conservation or related discipline, or degree level with significant built heritage experience.
  • Full membership of the Institute of Historic Building Conservation (IHBC) or working towards it.
  • Minimum two years' relevant work experience as a built heritage specialist.
  • Good knowledge of guidance, legislation, and planning policy pertaining to the historic environment.
  • Good technical experience and knowledge of building conservation/historic buildings.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including report writing and presentation.
  • Good project management skills, including prioritization and time management.
