Job Summary

This is a maternity leave cover Consultant post in Cardiac Anaesthesia. The postholder will have significant involvement in the delivery of cardiac anaesthesia services, including daytime cover and on-call duties. The department covers various anaesthesia specialties, and a dynamic individual with supplementary interests would be welcomed.

Main Duties
  1. Provide a service for Anaesthesia, including all aspects of treatment and relevant management duties for the proper functioning of the department.
  2. Share responsibility with other Consultants for providing 24-hour, 7-day cover for the Unit on a rota basis, including covering colleagues' periods of annual leave and short-term sickness.
  3. Provide clinical supervision of junior medical staff as a shared responsibility with other consultant colleagues.
  4. Contribute to departmental research interests in accordance with the Trust's R&D framework.
  5. Participate in audit programs, morbidity and mortality meetings, and clinical governance initiatives.
  6. Take an active role in the formulation, implementation, and monitoring of the department's/Division's Business Plan.
  7. Exercise professional leadership for all staff working in the specialty, fostering and developing projects to enhance post-qualification professional education and training.
  8. Work in conjunction with clinical and other professional colleagues to ensure the productivity of staff within the specialty is maintained and their job satisfaction is enhanced.
  9. Undertake Divisional management duties as agreed with the Divisional/departmental Manager/Clinical Director.
  10. Be aware of and comply with all Trust infection prevention and control policies, including hand hygiene, personal hygiene, environmental, and food hygiene.

Person Specification

Qualifications

  • GMC registerable medical qualification
  • Full Registration with GMC and completed subspecialty training programme in anaesthesia or within 6 months of completion or equivalent experience

Desirable

  • On the specialist register

Training and Experience

  • Wide experience and accredited training in most aspects of anaesthesia, including cardiothoracic surgery, and capable of delivering services appropriate to a large teaching hospital
  • Advanced cardiac training/fellowship and experience in TOE (transoesophageal echocardiography)

Desirable

  • Experience of delivering Anaesthesia at Consultant level and supervising junior colleagues within that capacity
  • Accreditation in TOE (transoesophageal echocardiography)

Administration

  • Experience in day-to-day organisation of Pain and Anaesthetic services in a busy NHS Hospital

Management and Leadership

  • Experience in day-to-day organisation of anaesthetic services in a busy Teaching Hospital
  • Able to demonstrate leadership capability within multi-disciplinary teams

Desirable

  • Familiarity with current structure of Health Service and conversant with recent initiatives and changes
  • Management course and/or qualification

Audit

  • Thorough understanding of principles of medical audit. Must have undertaken and completed audit projects

Desirable

  • Organisation of Audit/Journal Clubs and Morbidity & Mortality Meetings

Research and Publications

  • Experience of clinical research

Desirable

  • Publication of relevant peer-reviewed papers in the field of Anaesthesia/ transplantation

Teaching

  • Experience of undergraduate and post-graduate teaching and exam preparation

Desirable

  • Teaching qualification Simulation instruction/facilitator
