Position Overview

We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Optometric Specialist to become a vital member of our esteemed Optometry Team at University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust.

The ideal candidate will possess a solid background in essential Hospital Optometry services, including Adult and Paediatric Refractions, Medical Contact Lenses, and Low Vision Rehabilitation. This role also offers the chance to engage in advanced responsibilities such as pre/post-operative cataract management and emergency eye care.

As part of this position, the successful candidate will contribute to our educational initiatives, mentoring Pre-registration optometrists, training Ophthalmologists, nurses, and other healthcare professionals within our organization.

In light of recent service provision changes, the successful candidate will also be expected to assist with the Saturday morning Eye Casualty Triage service.

Main Responsibilities

We invite applications for a Band 7 Lead Optometric Specialist to join our Optometry Team. This role is structured for 4 days (30 hours) per week, from Monday to Friday, with occasional Saturday morning commitments.

The successful applicant will collaborate closely with the Principal Optometrist to deliver a comprehensive array of optometric services, ensuring the highest standards of quality and care across our facilities.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Functioning as an autonomous practitioner, managing patient caseloads in specialized clinics that involve advanced optometric roles, including treatment decisions, medication prescriptions, and referrals to sub-specialty Consultants.
  • Providing core optometric services, such as routine and diagnostic refractions, specialist medical contact lens management, and visual impairment rehabilitation.
  • Working in partnership with Principal and Lead Optometrists to ensure the delivery of high-quality core and advanced optometric services.
  • Promoting best practices within the Optometry department and offering expert guidance to colleagues in managing complex cases.
  • Overseeing training initiatives and engaging in specialized clinical activities that require extensive knowledge and expertise.
  • Utilizing advanced clinical techniques to provide specialized assessments and interpretations.
  • Participating in departmental audit frameworks and cooperating with clinical audits and competency assessments.
