About the Role

The Facilities Department at Wirral University Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust is seeking a motivated and enthusiastic Porter Shift Leader to join our Goods Distribution team. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for ensuring the daily delivery of supplies across the site and the accurate processing of relevant documentation and orders.

Main Responsibilities

  • Supervise the Good Distribution Centre (GDC) Portering Service staff on a daily basis.
  • Monitor attendance and absence of GDC Portering Services Staff, documenting and arranging cover for sickness absence, annual leave, and training.
  • Inform GDC Portering staff of any relevant information or amendments to the rota.
  • Monitor the performance of all GDC Portering staff in line with the core values and behaviours of the role.
  • Complete relevant administrative documentation relating to sickness, annual leave, training, and Appraisals.
  • Conduct return to work interviews for GDC Portering Services Staff.
  • Train new and current staff in line with policies and procedures, including manual handling.
  • Forward reporting on a daily basis to the Portering Manager.
  • Understand and apply techniques of moving and handling.
  • Attend all necessary training to gain the knowledge and skills required to be a fully competent Shift Leader.
  • Participate in the Trust annual appraisal system and personal development process.

Person Specification

  • Basic computer/Keyboard skills.
  • Ability to drive.
  • ILM Introductory Certificate in First Line Management or equivalent.
  • Customer Service Level 3 or equivalent.

Knowledge and Skills

  • The ability to communicate easily and confidentially with all levels of personnel, colleagues, patients, and visitors.
  • Knowledge of basic ordering systems.
  • Understanding and operation of the appropriate procedures for Portering services.
  • Knowledge and understanding when implementing correct procedures on the disposal of waste.
  • Knowledge of oxygen cylinders and the correct gauges and cylinder carriers.
  • Knowledge and understanding of patient confidentiality and the ability to deal with sensitive issues.
  • Understanding and operation of the appropriate procedures for all portering services.
  • Understanding Wirral hospital/Health & Safety procedures.
  • Understanding COSHH regulations.

  • Polite, friendly, and welcoming manner when dealing with patients and colleagues.
  • The ability to maintain a professional approach at all times.
