About the Role

The Wellcome Sanger Institute is seeking a talented Computational Biologist to join the Genome Reference Informatics Team on a 2-year contract. As a key member of the team, you will be responsible for the improvement of automated genome assemblies through manual curation using bespoke software and tools.

Key Responsibilities
  • Manual curation of genome assemblies to produce high-quality chromosome-scale references
  • Analysis and improvement of automated genome assemblies
  • Feedback and lessons learned from the curation process to influence software development and overall assembly strategy
Requirements
  • Degree in a Biological or Computational discipline, or equivalent experience
  • Demonstrable knowledge of genomics, genome assembly, and analysis
  • Knowledge of the Unix computing environment and ability to modify files and run command-line scripts

  • Ability to organise, plan, and prioritise a diverse range of work to meet deadlines

About Us

The Tree of Life Programme investigates the diversity of complex organisms through sequencing and cellular technologies to explore the evolution of life, provide the raw materials for new biotechnology, and deliver tools and understanding for biodiversity conservation.

The focal point of our work is the Darwin Tree of Life Project, a major national initiative to provide high-quality reference genome sequences for all eukaryotic species in the British and Irish Isles.

We are also part of other Biodiversity Genomics projects, including the Vertebrate Genomes Project, Biodiversity Genomics Europe, the Aquatic Symbiosis Genomics Project, and the Earth BioGenome Project.
